Particually USB 3 can be a problem to get booting on newer boards unless there is all sorts of stuff in windows. It never works properly when booted.

 

Are these desktops or laptops? What form factor is the SSD, what USB drive caddy are you using? this is so vauge on information its hard to suggest anything.

It gets weirder and weirder. The drive works fine but only if I use one specific cable connection. The same connection works fine with all other devices, but not this one. I have no idea why and I don't really care. Everything works fine as long as specific cables are plugged into specific devices. As far as I am concerned, this project is finished.
