XP Pro, going to Win7 soon.... apart from the usual browing etc, I play a lot of games such as Borderlands, Grid, Rainbow 6 Vegas 2 amongst others.... also the odd bit of video work for home DVDs etc.

IMHO the demand for 4GB is more marketing than actual necessity etc - maybe towards the end of this year 4GB will start to be a minimum spec for some things, but show me something the standard consumer runs that reqs or is even recommended 4GB.

But with the price of RAM these days, buying 4GB+ straight off defintely wont hurt anything :)

The i7 motherboard in his build is triple channel though so 3x 2GB makes sense.

The only change I would make to the specs ot the first page is change the RAM to G.Skill Ripjaws 6GB DDR-1600 CL8 the reason mainly because the cooling on it.
It might be just me but I like having every thing in my computer run as cool as it can get it to while runng gamers on high. I know a few people who have there computers shutdown in the middle of games because of overheating. Also the CL8 will load games a little bit quicker than CL9

Ive only seen RAM overheat in a PC once.... and that was because it was faulty.
A lot of magazine reviewers tend to rubbish RAM heatsinks/cooling "gimmicks", long as youve got reasonable airflow etc you shouldnt need them....... but thats my opinion :)

Hey,

Did you end up buying the specs you listed, what about Opperating System?

I can build something with much better specs (Sapphire HD5870 .., 2x2 GB (4 gb kit) DDR3-1600 CL7, 1TB Western Digital Black Edition HDD (super fast), the power supply you've picked is over the top aswell, a 650watt decent quality psu will be fine, even this is more then needed for specs above.

I've Pm'd you back, check your PM for my phone numbers etc, give me a ring so I can quickly check what you need, I can build you this complete computer including O/S for not much more then your budget, but for heaps better parts.. as in the better graphics card which is $595 plus GST on its own :)

I'll build you the computer for the following, Parts at cost plus GST, But the only profit you could say I'll charge is $35.00 for assembly/cable tidy methods and testing including 3dmark06 and 2 hour stress/burn in test. The reason I am doing this so cheap and making virtually nothing out of it, is to build up my history with my wholesaler.

I also remove the factory intel thermal paste , and reapply with Gelid GC-Extreme thermal paste to aid in better cooling abilities. With the Core i5 I would reccommend the Zalman CNPS10X-Quiet, its an awesome fan which allows the core i5 to overclock itself easier as it wont be getting anywhere as hot as the stock fan, and this larger fan is quieter then the stock fan anyway... Just some hints.
