As far as I know, it lets you combine the processing power of two not-so-top-end cards to get near the equivalent performance of a top-end card for a little cheaper. Or, to combine two top-end cards to get extreme graphics performance.
For example, the HD5770 I purchased cost about $300. I could buy another, and put them in crossfire, to get twice the processing power and it would cost in total about $600. If I had purchased a HD5870, which has twice the processing power of the HD5770, it would have cost me around $700. So crossfire is a cheaper option for me by about $100.
On the other hand, while it may cost less to buy two graphics cards and put them in crossfire, it may cost you more for a better power supply since two graphics cards will in theory draw more power than a single graphics card.
ok i see i just got 1 ASUS RADEON HD4850 512MB just wating to get another one lol. trying to do the best gaming system i can for as cheep as i can (hate being a student lol)
I think you made a good choice. 4850 crossfire is a very powerful GPU option. What power supply will you be using? 4850's are hot and hungry for power.
Yeah I will have to check it out when I get home. I'm adding 1 more fan and the cards have 1 each on them so I hope I get enough cooling. My CPU has a tunnel type thing so hopefully not much heat will radiate to it.
ok so i have 1 asus eah 4850 i am wanting to know what video cards i can crossfire with it does it have to be the exact same card or can it be another 4850?
My only suggestion is not to buy off trademe for a card unless your ok with second hand. If you want a brand new good card then forget trademe especially if price is a sticking point. Go to pricespy which is a great nz site (so add .co.nz to it) and then you will find the best price available for your money and may find that you could save a good amount of money by not getting off trademe.
I will not ever buy technology items worth more than $10 from trademe as the people on their are generally relying on peoples ignorance of what the true price of their product is.
Using your example 4850 1G on trademe new at $218 cheapest 1 gig card on pricespy $195.
However in saying that there is a auction on Tm at the moment where you can get 2 4850's for $200 closes saturday. (2nd hand of course).
