Well ... I don't believe it, it's running ... with a slight hitch.

Took everything out and laid it down on top of cardboard. Cleaned the CPU and Heatsink/Fan again and put slightly less thermal paste on than last time.

Hooked it all up and she goes. Got windows 7 running also, and most hardware.

Then the CPU fan just stopped working, lol. It went hardout for a minute and then stopped spinning. The PC is still running but I didn't like the idea of it not spinning so I've shut it down.

Will source another heatsink and fan and go from there before i hook her back into the case. Will let you know how i get on.

Thanks for the help!

Good result. If you are doing cpu again look up some instructions for correct application of thermal grease - it is a different pattern for each cpu believe it or not. Silver Fox (if i remember) has a good guide.

Fans turning off can be normal for bios with temperature monitoring and fan control like asus. Get the asus monitoring software installed so you can see what is going on.

Yeah that was the first thing i checked, but that feature is disabled in BIOS. Besides it's bringing up 'CPU Fan Error' when i start the computer and asks me if i want to resume. It's totally dead. Will get a new one today.

Just looked at the Arctic Silver guide and it appears I've done it correctly, just a little dot in the middle, and I have the cleaning materials.

Thanks
