Oh true! The Apps landing page implies it's a pay-for product... but here's the link for free users:

Most mail clients phone/desktop will read from all of the mainstream mail sources so I can't see why it actually matters which one anyone uses. There is nothing stopping anyone from using both.

I disagree with the higher reliabilty and upime part. Any proof of this? Because both hotmail and gmail have suffered from outages in the past. In the end it comes down to the interface and the extra features they offer.

slartibartfast: Go with Gmail (Google Apps) - you won't be dissapointed.

It will support pretty much any smartphone well, and has loads of other features (e.g. Google Docs, Sites). Very fast, very reliable.

Of course, if you're on Windows Phone 7 or have lots of other stuff already with various Microsoft entities then Hotmail might be better.

I have had two hotmail accounts and both started receiving spam within minutes of being created....before I had sent any email or told anyone the address.

On Gmail I rarely ever see spam...and even then only in my spam folder. Maybe twice / year one gets through to my Inbox. Maybe.

Gmail's integration with every other Google service and with Android (or a GMail app for someother phone) makes it a total winner.

Yeah, and the default theme looks terrible on my monitor. They did it to news as well. Must get in and change that before I go blind.

No. Google publish a few stats (on apps and elsewhere), but Microsoft publish none at all.

No proof at all. This is purely opinion from me over the many years I have been using gmail with not one complete outage type problem vs the number of times I have seen the hotmail 'maintenance' message on other people's accounts just because I've happened to be in the room.

Also, Google's actual service availability is likely better than their own stats show, because (I believe) they log service outages as small as a second or less which rarely affect actual users. eg; It is possible my accounts have experienced many of these without my even noticing or any interruption to my workflow.

That said, I don't want to knock Microsoft's product there are a lot of good reasons to use it. This article is worth a look for the differences.

Actually until recently Google only considered an outage an outage if it lasted longer than ten minutes. They inflated their availability a lot. This was talked a lot around.

As for LinuxLuver comments on spam... I have a Hotmail account created in 1995, and I use it for Messenger and other things. I received about twenty spam emails last year. On the other hand my GMail account receives about 50 spam emails daily.

Ever since this guy left http://stopdesign.com/about I think many of Google design changes/refreshes have been for the worse.

I'm not a fan of the Google Calendar changes and those gmail changes look crap to me, usually I don't mind changes but the changes to calendar made it harder to use.

Fortunately in the settings of each app that has been "refreshed" there is an option to "Use classic look".
