I think it's better to try and find then fix the actual problem rather than use static hosts file entries as a band aid fix.

Q1: Do you get the same issues with a different browser, ie: Google Chrome or Firefox?

Q2: Have you tried running IE7 with addon's and extensions disabled?
start > run > "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -extoff

Q3: Have you tried resetting IE7's settings?

Also run a scan with Malware Bytes free

I agree with you, but sometimes .....

Q1: Nope, only IE

Q2: Yes.

Q3: Yes, including resetting defaults and reinstalling

Have run Malware Bytes, SpyBot, AVG, and AdAware.

UPDATE: Tried putting Google IPs and DNS in hosts file ... no effect, still problem

Deleted hosts file, reinstalled IE7, cleaned out cache, internet temp files, cookies, etc. Ran CCleaner (Registry cleaner) ... no effect.

Annoyingly random as the error ocurrs about once every 4 or 5 times IE is opened.

Now you have done that, how about running the install with the 'install latest updates for windows malware detector' unchecked?

Also, are you running the latest installer available from MS?

The other thing MS suggest is resetting IE security settings to default. MS detail the manual process and also have a fixit button to do it automatically - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917925

gzt - downlaoded latest IE8 just in case ... no go. Also, the install stops if you uncheck the malicious software check & installs. Can't see anyway around that.

Back on the original problem, how about disabling the windows dns client cache completely and see if that makes a difference. If that works try disabling negative caching only.

gzt - flushed DNS cache, disabled DNS cahe ... no change.

Seriously thinking of waving chicken entrails over the machine now .
