A commercial UPS would be more compliant, but less efficient. I'll consider that.

timmmay: The ONT and router both take 12V, router has a 2A PSA ONT 1A, but power consumption is approx 18W according to my power meter. The Fritzbox has a standard plug, but the ONT has some weird kind of power connector I'd have to identify.  <Snip>.

I'm solar powered with back up generator so have no issues with power disruption at my home, however - in a major power cut I believe the street cabinets have limited UPS capabilities and therefore irrespective of what you put in your home (or mine) you're entirely reliant on the cabinet being functional. Have you considered investigating that aspect before you go spending a lot of money?

Awesome, thanks. Do you know the name of that type of plug in case I want to order some online?

That's an excellent point. Does anyone know how long UFB should last in a power cut?

From what I have seen the OLT's are at the exchange. UFB cabinets are just passive splitters. Exchanges have MUCH more battery capacity than the whisper cabinets and most of the good sized ones have a backup generator.

Does anyone know if the ONT needs exactly 12V. Or does it have an input voltage range? Say from 10V to 14V?

Asking as Im currently planning my own back up power system. The router I have decided to buy supports from 9V to 24V, My Wifi AP - 5V. It will be alot easier to setup if All I need is a deep cycle battery, And a high current 13.5V power supply to both charge the battery and power everything.

I'm probably going to go with this UPS unit, along with perhaps this 12V 12AH battery. Anyone want to guess how long that will run the fibre modem thingy and the fritzbox? I could go up to the 33AH battery, but it's $220 and 12kg, seems kinda like overkill.

I haven't found a case yet either - it's quarter brick size apparently, no idea what that means.

While I'm ordering stuff does anyone know what other bits I'll need? I hate assembling stuff and finding I have to order stuff and wait a few days. I'll need the Fritzbox plus, UTP plug, connectors for batteries and such, case, power wire... anything else?

When I placed my UFB order I got to choose a medium cabinet and a UPS to go along with the install (I don't have star wiring). Are ISPs no longer providing the UPS as an option?

An ISP can provide a UPS and has always been able to do so. Chorus or the LFC however will not supply a UPS.

From my time working on the SDP (remember that little gem, I wont forget, still got many unpaid $k with the receivers, doubt I will ever see it!) we were supplying 15V to the ALU ONT as I recall it has plenty of regulation on its input so was pretty tolerant.

Will it be ok with 12V? I plan to power the ONT and router from the one unit.

You can't power the ONT with 12V as you won't have a power lead to do so. The only way of getting one will be to hack the Chorus supplied plug pack which they wouldn't be too happy with.

You sure about that as it was a tickbox in the ordering portal. I did the order myself...

The tickbox means the Chorus tech will install the RSP supplied UPS during the initial install.

Chorus don't supply them, in part because nobody in the industry could decide who would pay for battery replacements every 24 months.

Why can't I just buy the plug and make the cable up myself? I'm not going to damage anything on purpose, and if I break anything (unlikely as I'm careful) I'll pay for a new one.
