No wonder so many ignore copyright & download illegally.
If you make stupid laws, people see whole issue as way over the top and rebel against the whole lot.

I've got a 216play here too, and hardware transcoding doesn't work on Plex because they [Plex] don't support non-Intel chips at the moment. If you use Synology's original apps DS Video etc. that's where the hardware transcoding works.

The very reason I went the 216+II, it uses a intel chip

They are $100~ more but transcodes with Plex flawlessly.

Any of the major NAS suppliers should be OK. While they have their pluses and minuses, they are all fairly similar as far as most regular users go.

Mine is an 8-bay Asustor (which I got at a bargain as a refurb in late 2013, and it hasn't missed a beat). But I'm sure I would be equally happy with an equivalent QNAP or Synology unit.

More materially than the brand is picking a unit that can do what you want:

How much storage might you need (hint: always more than you think) and how many bays are needed for that.
Do you want RAID1/5/6 for fault tolerance, if so take this into account in the number of bays you need.
What drives are you putting in (my advice: NAS specific drives, and on no account use greens)
What will it run - if it's just file serving in the home then any CPU is probably OK, if it will run Plex etc then you need enough grunt for any transcoding etc.

I regard all these as more important than which major manufacturers sticker is on the front.

If it's for business use with a significant number of users then things are different, and you should pay for professional advice (backups, UPS integration etc need to work well for business users).

Reading this thread made me buy Synology DS916+ 8gb
Its amazingly simple to setup and get it running to what you want.
