  1. You void the warranty of the hardware
  2. You break device policy
  3. You put your device into an unsupported configuration

If you believe your device is not up to the task for completing your job write a business case and go through the proper channels (ie your manager complaining to the IT manager).

Lias:

Nothing new really.. way back in 1999 there was a virus called Chernobyl that corrupted bios's thus bricking motherboards.

I got hit by Chernobyl! It bricked my Toshiba Satellite 320CDS!  I forgot all about that.

If we had a user request to have their personal SSD installed I would also decline.. however, not providing a reason or alternative solution is p!ss poor service and you should escalate.

The solution I would provided in this situation would be an SSD on the company dime, it would be the lowest priority at the mo, wouldn't be done this side of Christmas for us :)

I.T depts that are declining requests to boost productivity are mismanaged IMO

Batman:

Got an SSD lying around the place. Asked the IT department if I can swap the HDD of my desktop with my SSD. They said no can't be done.

Is there any risk to the company in doing so?

I agree with the other comments about supporting the IT department's "no" answer.

However, i feel that there is more to this story than you are letting on.  Especially since your question talks about "risk to the company".  I would go as far as to say the email you got back from the IT department had more than a simple "no, can't be done".

I'm not having a go at you, and if that was the complete response back from your IT department i agree it was not a good response.

They offered to "upgrade" it.

I just asked about risks of personal SSD, and got the answers.

Depends on how finance works within the business, and how the budget is structured for IT.
