I googled AOC U2870 and it came back as 4k. But an easy way to confirm is by right clicking on your desktop then selecting “display settings” then scrolling to “resolution” and seeing what the highest resolultion is - its usually the one that says “(Recommended)” next to the resolution. If it says 3840 x 2160 then you have a 4k display. Also while you are there let us know if you are running 100% or 125% or 150% scaling.

Hi, no mine just says 1920 x 1080 recommended

Scaling is at 100%

I'm using an HDMI cable

Is there an option in the list for 3840x2160 or is that as high as it goes? I must admit I assumed it was a 1080p monitor, but the specs on it don't look half bad if that is it. You could take a photo of the build plate on the back of the monitor and post it if you want someone to confirm.

Personally I'd still prefer a ultrawide 1440p or a larger 4k for productivity, but then I am ok with trading off sharpness for more usable real estate taking up a big chunk of my FOV. Depends on your seated distance from the monitor, as well as how many things you want to see at one time vs how fine the work is ie. photo editing etc. At this point, you might be better off waiting until you can sample the goods to see where you land on that spectrum.

And if you want to go higher than 4096x2160, such as the 5k2k IronH suggested, you will need to also budget for a new GPU as well.

@IronH, very clean setup you have there, nice monitor.

The problem comes up when older displayport will do resolutions but it knocks it back to 4:2:0 YUV which looks aweful. When changing to RGB 8 bit full range so things dont look terrible, the refresh rate drops to the point where you have a cinematic mouse pointer.

Seems some people have eyesight so bad that they dont notice all the bleeding on text with the messed up chroma, or the banding from it dropping back to limited range YUV.

You've got me into the Ultra Wide idea now lol! Much more practical for my workspace.

I like the Dell one you suggested and I might go for that...if anyone doesn't have other options?

I found my monitor and it isn't FHD lol https://www.harveynorman.co.nz/computers/monitors/aoc-28-m2870vq-full-hd-led-monitor.html

So I'm set for the Dell one. Hopefully it's future proof enough!

Well if it's 1080p then going to any ultrawide will be a decent upgrade.

28" 1920x1080 = ~2M pixels, 79PPI, ~2100cm2 viewable area

34" 3440x1440 = ~5M pixels, 110PPI, ~2700cm2 viewable area

38" 3840x1600 = ~6.2M pixels, 110PPI, ~3300cm2 viewable area

Having said that your current monitor may actually be a 4K display (guessing this based only on the incomplete model number of U2870 - if you can get us the full model# it will help) but it might be limited by the HDMI port and/or HDMI cable you are using. eg if you have a HDMI 1.4 port on your video card which can support 4K @30Hz but are using an HDMI 1.0 cable you will be limited by the lower spec of HDMI 1.0 which only supports a maximum 1920x1080 resolution.

Also without knowing the exact specs of your GTX750Ti, I'd have to guess what version displayport and HDMI it has: 750Ti was released in Feb 2014, and with that age I'm guessing it probably has HDMI version 1.4 and displayport version 1.2. Between the two, DP1.2 is superior as it can handle 4K 4:4:4 @ 60Hz while HDMI1.4 can't. If it does have DP1.2 then you should be fine with the ultrawide you're considering.

If you have a display port 1.2 or an HDMI 1.4 cable around then might also be worth trying it with your current monitor.

oh M2870, not U2870. In that case it isn't 4K and the Ultrawide will be a significant upgrade for you.

There are many good ultrawides, however right now with so many people working from home, less output coming from China and less freight, there is a current supply/demand problem. Eg The monitor I’m after went out of stock last weekend and now has an ETA of late June. So you have limited choice right now as many ultrawides are out of stock, but the Dell you are looking at is showing stock. Nothing wrong with that one. You can use pricespy to sort monitors by aspect ratio, and check who has stock.

I've been watching this thread with real interest as I have an 8yr old 27-in monitor (2560x1440) and wanted a bit more real estate.  After watching a whole lot of Youtube reviews and dithering between a 32-in 4k monitor which technically has a higher resolution  and the 34-in Ultrawide's I settled on an LG-34UC99 Ultrawide with IPS panel and USB-C hub.  Looked seriously at the Titan Army Ultrawide monitors and nearly bought one but considering my current monitor has lasted 8yrs and still going, decided to go for a higher quality panel and get the IPS panel and USB-C connectivity.

Now hoping that PBTech deliver today, or tomorrow at latest!

I've got a friend who bought a Samsung C49HG90 49" QLED monitor the other day. https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/MONSAM49HG90/Samsung-C49HG90-49-QLED-Monitor-for-the-ultimate-g

Says it's really good. It can have two different inputs, so he can have his PC on one half and Playstation on the other. Very handy when working from home! 😄

So many monitors to choose from.

I think I've narrowed it down to 38" Ultra Wide.

But which one?!

So I'm thinking the Dell 38 one. Got the mouse practically hovering over the buy button!

https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/MONDEL3818/Dell-UltraSharp-U3818DW-38-Curved-IPS-Monitor--384

Maybe https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/MONLGL73895/LG-38WK95C-W-38-Curved-WQHD-Ultrawide-Monitor-USB

It's only 60hz refresh rate. I do want something that's good and a little future proof as I'm not the type to buy the latest upgrade.

I'm not a gamer but do like good specs and watching a little streaming.

I also edit video every so often.

What do you guys think? Any other suggestions?

My budget would be 2 grand, maybe a little over if it was future proof etc.

Cheers:)

We got a 29 inch of ultra wide and love it. We only had a 22 inch old Dell work monitor so this was a big upgrade for us to decent colour, more real estate and higher refresh rate. If you're already sporting a 28 inch it would be a downgrade in size as it's about the height of a 24 inch but not resolution.

My pc won't drive a 1440p display for games, especially not with the extra pixels an ultra wide adds and the consensus was going up to 34 inch you really want the extra pixels to avoid the screen door effect so I didn't waste the extra money. For games I only use the ultra wide but when working from home we still have the old Dell next to it, the real estate is ridiculous when it comes to productivity software. Actually looking at maybe replacing the old Dell with a nicer 24 inch to make the experience a bit more consistent.
