SOOO glad I built in October/November last year thanks Flight Sim. Would have been tragic to have waited for what ever Intel call the 11900K.

I am so glad I built when I did last year - parts are expensive now.

@networkn not sure if you're still looking but somebody I know personally on here has a CPU + Motherboard combo for sale that will at-least get you started with a decent rig: https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=77&topicid=284075

Thanks, I did see that. Probably going to wait and see how Alder Lake pans out. The 8700K I have now is pretty capable, my issue right now appears to be a graphics card bottleneck, but I can't really wrap my brain around $2500 for a graphics card!

I think if I was going as far as the 5800x I'd probably just stump for the 5900x which whilst more expensive, would present better value.

It's a little tempting though :)

@networkn I have the Ryzen 3800X and built my PC for both gaming + work and photo / video editing (3800X, 64gb ram, RTX3070). I can play anything I want on ultra settings and I have never had my CPU struggle.

The 5800X outperforms my CPU. I remember my friend getting it and showing off his benchmarks against my ones.

Yeah, it's a good CPU, but I am not really CPU constrained as such, gaming performance between the 5800x and the 8700K at 1440, is relatively small. My issue is graphics, and seeing as you can't get a decent card for less than a kidney *and* a truckload of cash.....

Having said that, I have 2 x 2TB NVME Gen 4 SSD's so I think I'd be looking at x570 M/B to get 2 slots with that capability I think.

I wouldn't be buying any CPU for a while if I can avoid it. Ryzen 4 will be DDR 5 and likely extend their advantage considerably. There is talk about really high core counts which would largely render Intel irrelevant for mainstream use.

Geez... I do want to eventually pay off my mortgage.

So much this lol

I wanted to wait but (luckily in hindsight) got very impatient, plus I got a 3080 (before the hike) so I'm all in for the long haul now, it was either get ahead of the curve of stock issues or wait it out like most tried to and that's turned out very bad. I think AMD's next gen CPU's are going to have the market leader price tags attached that Intel held for a very long time.

Pretty happy with my 3700X. Had been back on intels since my i7 2600K. When the 3000 series launched switched back to AMD, and price has been great. I probably could sweak out a few more frames with the latest intel at the time, but it was well priced and Im pretty happy with them.

Its much of a much-ness. As of lately AMD have been a LOT better in my opinion (performance per $ & watt). But I opted for a decent motherboard.

In either case, unless you are really stressing the unit, e.g. gaming, or number crunching in some way (video editing / rendering ). Then its going to make very little difference. A few frames here and there. Not worth losing sleep over.
