magu: I use and recommend to all friends/customers: ESET (previously known as NOD32). Very light on resources, even on slow computers.

It's still called NOD32. ESET is the company, NOD32 the product

Hmm. ChilliSoft told me differently in a workshop last year.

I still call it NOD32 anyways.

What about some antivirus/firewall suggestions for a netbook with only 1GB RAM?

I have a WWAN connection now and not behind the router at home all the time so additional firewall software might be important? How good is the Win XP firewall?

I found Kaspersky Internet Security Special Edition for Ultra-Portables but the changes seem to be around making the UI fit a netbook screen res rather than lowering memory usage?

ZoneAlarm firewall/antivirus has 4 processes running on my Vista machine each using >150MB so I wouldn't want to try that (although there would only be a single process on a single CPU system).

Avast would do the job well. In my experience the latest version of AVG, with it's browser plugin, has started to emulate Norton in the bloat department.

I run Avast in my VM's - this is where you notice the impact of bloated software the most. Prior to discovering Avast I would prefer to run without AV in a VM.

Cheers I'll check that out. Are you using the free or pro version?

Do you use a firewall in your VMs? (I don't bother because I use NAT so the VM is behind the host machines firewall I assume)

I use the Pro Family Pack - http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-professional-family-pack.html - $180 per year for 10 pc's and one Windows Home Server - you can't beat that for value!
The home edition (free version) is no different from the pro as far as virus protection capabilities goes.

I only enable the firewall on my Internet facing interface.

I have installed the free version of AVG on all the family's computers. Not had a single problem with it since I switched to it several years ago.

I'd go on a Vegan diet but the delivery time from Vega is too long.

A clean reinstall of ZoneAlarm seems to have fixed the scanningprocess memory usage, all four processes are back to 10MB or less.

Eset Smart Security. Although it's firewall isn't as good as Online Armor / Outpost / Jetico, it's way better than the XP firewall (which, btw, is a joke).

Outpost Security Suite looks like a nice all in one antivirus/antispam/firewall, it's a lot cheaper than ZoneAlarm too. Can't find many reviews but I'll try the demo.

Outpost AntiVirus isn't that good though, and it's not as light as ESET.
