billgates: Hotmail offers the Windows live admin center hub which is where you setup your custom domain for an free email address. It works fine without any issue. You get the 25GB Skydrive for free along with other free hotmail features. In the end it comes down to the email interface you prefer.

I have a windows phone and can pull my emails, contacts and calendar in real time (Exchange active sync). Have no hotmail calendar issues what so ever.

Thanks for all the replys. I'm hoping it will integrate with outlook nicely too, I'm guessing the hotmail ooption would be better suited on that front. So is the Exchange active synch a paid option?

freitasm: You can use either GMail or Windows Live Hotmail.

Windows Live Hotmail supports ActiveSync, which is used on Windows Phone, iPhone/Ipad and Android, so there's no excuse in the "depends on which phone you have" department.

You set a Google Apps for your domain at http://www.google.com/a and Windows Live Domain at http://domain.live.com.

Windows Live Domain accounts are exactly like other Windows Live account and will have Skydrive storage (25GB on the cloud), can be used to login on Windows Live Messenger, etc.

The only real difference will be if you need multiple email aliases per account, since Windows Live Domain accounts don't have support for aliases.

Exchange active sync is free with every hotmail account but it's only to be used with Smartphones and tablets only.

freitasm: Actually until recently Google only considered an outage an outage if it lasted longer than ten minutes. They inflated their availability a lot. This was talked a lot around.

Fair enough. Even so, Google provide a service level agreement and stats for users to disagree with. Ideally Microsoft would do the same.

Maybe the difference in SLA is because Google Apps can be a paid service and Windows Live Mail is not.

@billgates - Enjoying the details about the new hotmail. Haven't used it for a decade, although I have migrated a few people away from it over that time ; ).

Well I'm using Hotmail with my own domain via the Windows Live Domain service and I'm perfectly satisfied with it, as are various family members.

It works great via the standard Hotmail web interface. You get full access to mail, calendar and contacts via the Windows Live email client for Windows, the Office Outlook add-in and activesync on a variety of mobile devices. The latter being free by the way in response to an earlier comment.

It's worked well for me and probably comes down to a matter of personal preference as to whether you go for Hotmail or Gmail, but whatever you do - use your own domain name. Then you can move it where you like in the future.

I think that might resolve what was being asked for. Not sure if it applies to windows live domain though

You are correct but as of today, the alias support for Windows live domain is not there yet. The hotmail team did mention in their official blog that they are looking into adding the support for windows live domain account as well.
