UPDATE:
Uninstalled IE7 and reverted to IE6 ... no problems for last hour! Will give it a bit longer to see what happens.
Tried installing IE8 over IE6, still no go, same error messages and 'malicious software' download loop.

UPDATE: As of this morning, the problem with IE accessing Google seems to have dissapeared.
Maybe captk's approaches to TelstraClear 'helped them identify something' with their DNS servers? Who knows? .
