You can have power, or you can have simplicity. Robocopy is powerful, but can be complex. My script to back up parts of my drives are about a full screen of scripting, that's evolved over the years.

is there a list of which products are which series? (both my main drives are Samsung -- a G3 Station and an HD154UI).

Seagate model number 7200.11 is series 11. 7200.12 is series 12.

WD makes good consistent drives, and you can choose e.g. between a performance drive and a green drive. I was a big Samsung fan, but in the last 5 to 10 years they have commercialised too much and do not make top consumer products any more.

The 'existing drive' I mentioned earlier just happened to be a Samsung 500GB. To date it's the only drive I've purchased that's ever carked it on me.

Just an FYI if you are still in the market for drives...Dick Smith has 2tb Seagate externals on special for $128. Just went an bought myself a couple to tide me over until prices come back down.

And if you crack them open, they have a std sata III disk drive with 64MB cache (or at least mine did).

What are you guys still going on about price hikes? Price Spy shows only 2% increase over the past month, before that flat.

JB HiFi is also $128 for the same drive.

The price shown on the graph is the lowest price available, but, not necessary with stock, so, doesn't give a real indication of the price with falling prices where stores don't update their prices.

Some of them are up over 100%. Take computer lounge, a good reliable shop. They were selling 2TB hard drives for just under $110 a few weeks ago. The similar (perhaps the same) drive is now, just a tad more expensive...

JB HiFi is also $128 for the same drive.

Big retailers plan and source there stock for specials atleast a month out, DSE, JBHiFi and Warehouse stationery all have 2TB externals and at prices a lot lower then your aveeage computer store. This will change once the specials end.

For those looking at purchasing external drives, remember that the drives inside tend to be of the green or low power variety. If you plan to extract the drive to use as an internal drive in a PC, don't use them as a system drive, they're just too slow. Data storage is fine though.

the reviews on its website aren't promising. ...but I guess people who're unhappy with the purchase are more likely to post.

timmmay: There's also a gui for it, and synctoy is another option. You just have to be careful you don't mirror your mistakes to your backup drives.

I've tried SyncToy, but it annoyed me for a number of reasons. ...maybe I'll refresh my memory on it before I complain, though. (Robocopy looks a bit too L33t for me)

There is a gui version too, nothing beats RC in my opinion.

Im hoping my web orders on the seagates all come thru, but the ones I picked up from a shop are DAMN slow - I see 15MB/s copying to them from a sata drive that will do 80+ to another sata drive. Was hoping for closer to the theoretical 40 that USB2 is good for. Ah well, stuff gets backed up, just slower.
