billgates: Maybe you should at look at getting a terminal server environment for your company with thin clients. Our company has well over 1000 users and there are only 2 system engineers, 1 network engineer, 2 field engineers and 3 helpdesk people. The terminal server environment makes life so much easier for all of us in Operations. A lot of users do have laptops and desktops but we manage them remotely and don't touch them unless the software needs to be updated or there is an issue with it.

I actrually suggested that to them three years ago because I remember Waikato Uni's running the same thing in the library and it is fast.   But Tech Support told me it is too expensive to get a terminal server and it is cheaper to keep as it is.  I don't have the knowledge of that so I just kept quiet.  But in 2009/2010, we have been running XP 32-bit with 8GB RAM.  The manager was quite happy that we've got more RAM than other places so I couldn't say anything either.

32-Bit Windows XP won't use 8Gb RAM - it can't!!

Only the 64-Bit version of Win XP can address more than 3Gb of RAM, but there is a tweak to get it to 4Gb (but no more than 4Gb). They money they've spend on the additional 4Gb is wasted as it can't ever be used with the 32-Bit OS.

EXACTLY.  But the management was in such a good mood.  I didn't really want to break it.

Welllll, you _can_ make use of the extra memory, but basically only as a big RAMDisk via 3rd party software, which I used to use as a big swap partition, which then effectively gives you more RAM, albeit working slightly slower than "regular" RAM, but much faster than a HDD-based swapfile.
</pedantry>

RAMDisk Plus is the application in question, it works reasonably well. Probably not a great enterprise solution though.

The annoying thing is that it's NOT a limitation of a 32bit OS, but just a limitation of Microsoft's 32bit OS's. 32bit versions of OS X and Linux will happily access all 8GB on my home machines.

Microsoft had to find a reason for people to want to buy the 64-Bit version somewhere... and RAM was it

xpd: We have approx 150 staff across the country and there are 5 IT staffers (inc the IT manager) - so yes, theyre potentially overworked.

We look after everything to do with IT from the little things such as plugging in a mouse, to rewiring the infrastructure of some of the buildings.

$30k for a firewall system sounds like one of two things to me :

1)The company you work for has some extremely high level confidental contracts.
or
2) The manager heard of some great fantastic new firewall and went out and purchased it without further research.

Overall, the IT guys need another hand or two, AND a proper IT manager to report to (or at least a senior IT staffer to report to).

Yeah the 'shiny new toys' syndrome!  We see it a lot in schools where the ICT Leader (quite often the Principal) goes to a conference and sees something that the school 'must have' NOW and the IT budget gets thrown out the window and then we end up having to make it work.

Suggest hiring an external IT company. Trust me, there's a lot more motivation to work and to your full potential when you know that you can be replaced by one of hundreds of IT companies just like that....

Apart from that but these guys don't sound too educated on what they're actually doing....

I'm in Service Management Design. Threads like this just make me cringe, and highlight that there is so much more to corporate IT than just understanding the 'T'

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?
