timmmay: Mint seems much snapper than Ubuntu, at least when running of USB. I'll spend the 10 mins to change distros, starting from scratch again :)

Certainly mess around with different distros. There are many to choose.

Hi
My Mum is computer illiterate apart from Facebook (copying and pasting are beyond her current skill set). Her laptop is 10 years old. I put Linux Mint on it, she can use it and the OS runs okay. I do the security updates for her.

Have you considered Elementary OS Freya? (www.elementaryos.io) It is an Ubuntu derivative, and LTS, very polished looking (kinda like OSX) and also snappy. It sits in the top ten linux distros and is climbing higher. Of course it's also free.
