I have a recording off satellite

3840x2160 resolution
50 FPS

HEVC (H265)

60mbits average bitrate

4:2:2 YUV 10 -bit LE
HLG Colour
4 Audio tracks

most GPUs wont handle it in hardware, it brings my 5820K 6 core 12 thread @3.7ghz to about %80 usage across all cores and still drops frames via vlc and potplayer

Both of these are probably worth having a look at if you want to decide about the memory speed and configs.

Thanks Handle, I'll have a look later. Basically now I'm thinking Gigabyte B550 elite, temporary CPU of Ryzen 3 3100 (which is already 2.5X as fast as my current CPU) to upgrade in a year or so, Radeon 550, Crucial Ballistix 3600MHz Elite 32 GB (4 x 8 GB), plus coolers and such, link here. $1600.

Why would you bother buying Zen2 and then upgrading? It just seems like you're wasting money you won't get back.

Yeah, I'm leaning towards just doing the 5600X. The information you linked avove @Handle9 shows that 3600MHZ RAM is totally fine, about 2% slower than 4000MHz.

I'm just now looking at the range of motherboards available, PB has about eight Gigabyte B550 motherboards. Deciding which brand of RAM - I'll get 4x8GB as that's the fastest configuration. And seeing if I can find a more modern case that's still quiet, a padded one not a mesh one.

you will never notice that 2% especially so when coming from a platform thats over 50% slower than you currently have. nor with the workload you use the computer for.

I know :) That's why I'm going ahead working out the details now.

save the ~$50 and get 3200mhz memory and put it towards a better cooler. though the stock one will be fine for what you are using it for

I'll get 3600 CL18, currently have G.SKILL Trident Z Neo in the cart. It's about the same price as 3200. It's not expensive but the reviews seem to say it's fine.

Here's the current build version.

  • AMD 5600X
  • Gigabyte B550 AORUS PRO
  • 4x G.Skill Trident Z Neo 8GB (total 32GB)
  • Samsung 980 Pro 250 GB M.2-2280 NVME (I'm fine paying more for a smaller pro SSD, I have more disks)
  • Sapphire Radeon RX 550 (don't need a fast GPU)
  • Fractal Design Define R5 (still looking for a quiet case that's more modern)
  • Cooler Master MWE Gold 550 W 80+ Gold
  • Noctua A15 x 2 (or maybe x3 or x4). Maybe not this exact model but I like the brand.
  • No OS as a couple of people have told me it should use the W10 license associated with my Microsoft account. Not sure how that will go given I may give away or sell my old computer.

Total at PB is $2009, at Computer Lounge it's $2240 but that includes a faster 570 video card that I don't want, and their prices seem generally higher.

Is there anything else I'm likely to need, in terms of accessories or small parts? A guy I know building a similar machine needed to buy a splitter for his fans, but I don't know how well that'd work with PWM fans. I'd like to go PWM so the case fans spin down when not being used, and up when required, without me having to do anything.

Looks fine. Just check how many sata ports are supported by the motherboard when the nvme drive is in use. My B450 disables 2.of the 6 sata ports.

The motherboard should have at least 3 case fan headers as well as CPU and pump but you can check it in the documentation.

I'd also price out the difference to go to a 600 or 650W power supply in case this becomes a gaming rig for your little fella in 5 years. Power supply pricing has been really expensive lately so may not be worth it.

Thanks @Handle9. I'll look up SATA ports, fan headers. No need for a big PSU, if I need to replace it later I will - they're not expensive.

Still not sure on RAM. 3200MHz and 3600MHz RAM has about the same latency given 3200MHz tends to have lower CL values, so it works out to 9-10ns regardless. Interested in any opinions there.

SATA ports should only be disabled if you are using a SATA m2 hard drive, not a NVME one

3200 MHz CL16 and 3600 MHz CL18 have the same latency, but the 3600 RAM will be better overall, especially with Ryzen

This one seems ok for a silent case https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/CHACLM11600/Cooler-Master-Silencio-S600-ATX-Tower-Case-for-ATX but I don't know if it's any better than the Fractal one, just newer.

For fans, you won't want the A15 as that is airflow focused - you'll want a static pressure focused fan like the F15

Nope, not in my case. YMMV

SATA5 and SATA6 ports will be unavailable when installing a M.2 device in M.2 slot.
