The Exchange 2k3 SP2 server sits behind a Symantec SMTP gateway for Virus and SPAM filtering. So using ActiveSync to syncronise with it from Window Mobile3 I get an eror Code INTERNET_7 (wrong server name). I suspect problem is due to the SMTP server. In the Pocket PC device I have tried both the Exchange server name and the SMTP server name. Both fail the same. Please help.

First step:
Make sure the server name is in the form my_server.my_domain.com

Symantec MSSMTP shouldnt affect your sync at all. Almost all of my clients run this and I have half a dozen of them with mobile devices.

Are you attempting to sync via a cradle or a cellular data connection?

Exchange ActiveSync doesn't go through the SMTP server for synchronisation, so it shouldn't be a problem. However if you are using SSL and the certificate is incorrect, expired or not loaded on your device you might have problems.

Also, if you are trying to synchronise over ActiveSync on your PC inside your own network, the Pocket PC might not find the server because it will look for the external IP address, which may not be the same as your network's IP address for this server. In this case the easiest solution is to add an entry to the HOSTS file on your PC pointing to the internal IP.

If however you are only using ActiveSync from an external network (Internet) then you might have firewall problems. Make sure the firewall allows https connections to this server.

Our exhnage server name is not known outside our LAN. The MX record from ISP points to the SMTP gateway which has different froim the Exchange. So what server name should I use to configure the mobile device?
We also found the SSL certficate had expired and it is now being renewed. Will keep all posted

ok, on the device, the exchange server name should be "exchange_server_x". "your_domain". "com/net".
