looking at win 8 phone ,like most of them tossing up between ,520 620 720 kind of like the smaller size of the 620 , any pros n cons u guys have to add appreciated

I'm in a similar position, 520 vs 720.

The best thing I have done so far is go to GSM Arena and compare the specs side by side.

Seems to come down to this: Do I want to pay $200 more ($500, 720 vs $300 520) for a bigger screen made of Gorilla Glass (4.3", 720 vs 4" 520) and a bigger battery (2000 mAh , 720 vs 1430 mAh 520)?

Other than that the specs are pretty similar and the OS obviously identical.

The answer for me is: Yes, I do. But I'm not in that much of a hurry to upgrade right this second.

Didn't anybody tell you I was a hacker?

Are not 920 's only another $100? so why not go all the way and get a 920 ? I am bias as I have one and other than the "dammit windows 8 doesn't have that app!" moments it is a great phone worth the extra

If you are not worried about buying it from Expansys.co.nz you can get a Lumia 820 for about NZD $370 + postage, which may just sneek under the $400 threasth hold for paying GST, so next question if you were going to go down that road is 820 vs 720. again gsmarena might be good for a side by side comparison

I've recently bought a 720 from Expansys and it cost $392 including postage, so there was no GST or Customs to pay. I'm really happy with it, especially the battery life. This is the main reason I would recommend spending the extra $100 over the 520 because of much increased battery life. Also, the 520 doesn't have a front-facing camera, or a compass which I would definitely miss when driving. Readability of the 720's LCD in sunlight is also much better, according to GSM Arena, and Gorilla Glass is great to have.

Concerning the 920 that GNFB mentioned, are they not $800-900? Making them a far more expensive purchase, and also too heavy for my liking.

just checked the prices for genuine bought in NZ the difference between a 820 and a 920 is $200

For the 720's LCD it says: Contrast ratio: 1172:1 (nominal) / 2.512:1 (sunlight)

For the 520's LCD it says: Contrast ratio: 834:1 (nominal) / 1.161:1 (sunlight)

2.5 vs. 1.1 is a huge difference in readability outdoors. That's very important to me, but YMMV.

EDIT: I just saw these comments on the 520 review...

"The Lumia 520's screen doesn't use the ClearBlack tech and contrast is the biggest casualty. The display clearly lacks the punch of a CBD like the one on the Lumia 720. On a positive note, the viewing angles are quite good."

"The glass above the Lumia 520's screen is quite reflective, which means the phone is barely usable when outdoor on a bright sunny day."

I've ordered stuff from Expansys 3 times now and received prompt deliveries each time. My 720 arrived in 6 days, so I can't complain about that!

It's my first smartphone bought as an upgrade to my Motorola KRZR which although it had a camera, media player and bluetooth, didn't really cut it anymore. The KRZR also cost about $400 5 years ago, which has been money well spent for 5 years of faithful service. I don't see the point in spending almost $1000 for the latest models with all the bells and whistles which will suffer a huge price drop a year later. By choosing a mid-range phone, which is equivalent to the flagship models of 1-2 years ago, but with the latest software, I am getting a whole lot more bang for a whole lot less buck.

I am with 2degrees in a rural area, so most of the time I'm roaming on the Voda network, and then using 2d in the cities that I visit occasionally. The 720 works on every 3G band used in NZ though, so you won't have any problems using it on Telecom's network.

I'd like to contradict the view that the 520s viewing angle is good. I've not played with a 720, but I helped 2 first time users through setup of new 520s at work. I couldn't see the display while sitting directly beside the user. This was in sharp contrast to my lumia 800 which I don't know where the viewing angle kicks in because it's too thin to see first.

The screen is fine if you've never used a better one, but I'd not want to go back.

Those comments were from a GSM Arena review. I've never used the 520, so I can't say one way or the other.

However, I can say that the 720's viewing angle is excellent, with ample brightness available. If I wind it up full whilst indoors, it makes me want to wear sunglasses when looking at it!
