I'm curious to know if devices connected via a WP8 WiFi hotspot can communicate with one another? Under iOS (6.1.3 in my example) the devices can make an internet connection, but cannot see one another, while under Android (4.2.2 in my example), they can see one another and behave as they would on a regular WiFi access point.

Also, does the WiFi hotspot time out, on my old Android (2.2) it would only remain active for a maximum of 15 minutes.

I think it stays on as long as the connection is being used. If there is no activity it automatically turns off after a few minutes. You can share with a maximum of 8 devices.

Unfortunately I can't answer your main question.

Tested on Nokia 2010 and does provide an unrestricted LAN (both UDP and TCP). Throughput is much better than my Android (I would expect that this is device capability rather than the OS), with streaming of two separate HD stream from a server device to two end points without glitching.
