Partner is currently in UK, with an active sim from the Three network.

The lumia 520 isn't connecting to a network though.

Have tried checking the network settings , enabling 3G, and changing the country to UK.

Person in the phone shop said the phone needs unlocking, but that can't be right as it is originally a Vodafone handset that has been on degrees network until now.

Running out of ideas to get it working over there..

Tested the SIM on another handset to confirm it's working?

Tried to manually select a network?

check with Vodafone - they were definitely sim locking some of their handsets.  not sure if 520 is one

if the phone is > 9 months old, they don't charge an unlock fee - check here: http://www.vodafone.co.nz/help/mobile-phones/unlock/

Vodafone 520's weren't locked.

Check which frequency bands Three run on for 3G. The Vodafone variant only supports 900/2100 3G

Thanks, the Three network is only on 2100 band, with some 2G fallback. Staying in a town centre so should be in good coverage.

Would the 'network selection' app in the store be of use?

Are you running Windows Phone 8.1?

If so, go to the 'Settings' app, then 'Cellular + SIM' then at bottom you will see 'SIM settings' and in that you can set your connection speed (2G, 3G, 4G etc) and Network selection.

Do whatever you want to do man.

Is it seeing the sim? My 1520 initially didn't see the telecom sim until I rebooted it. This also meant that it didn't see any networks.

The only Windows Phone that has been SIM locked by Vodafone NZ to date is the Lumia 530. :)
