Is it possible to use a Verizon xv6700 or Palm TreoWX smartphone as a wireless modem? If I had a broadband plan with verizon and tethered one of the phones to a wireless router could I operate 1 or more laptops from it?

In theory you can use those devices as a modem when connecting directly on your PC. You can then share this connection to other PCs on your network.

You can't connect directly to a router, because of the lack of drivers and connections.

Also, I am not sure the Verizon versions can do this - it seems the American operators remove this capability from their versions. I know we can do this with the New Zealand ones...

So you are saying that I could use the phone as a wireless modem for multiple pc's? How would I go about connecting more than one pc or laptop to the phone's tether?

If your PC has Bluetooth you can try using the Bluetooth DUN service - providing Verizon Wireless have not disabled this on your Pocket PCs.

Once connected, right-click the connection and set the ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) from your Bluetooth DUN to your ethernet adapter. Other PCs must use an ethernet cable to access the Internet through this method.

This is not recommended because using ICS will automatically configure the network adapter to a specific IP address, and if you want to use it later to plug to another router you will have to manually disable ICS and change the adapter to obtain IP addresses automatically.

If you don't know how to do this, or are not confident on the steps to follow you may end up with a PC without connection to the Internet.
