Anyone using the Garmin Mobile XT/NZ Opensource Map combination? The map has been upgraded, it now features full street searching.

Get it here

I'm supposed to respect my elders, but it's getting harder and harder for me to find one now.

Cheers Peejay, just grabbed it. I don't imagine it'll be any different than what I already have with the custom POI for street names?

With Garmin Mobile XT and the new maps the streets are now searchable through Where To -> Addresses -> Country -> City -> Street Number -> Street Name.

I've also noticed that the Streets are now full names on the maps not any of those annoying abbreviated ones we had before.

All in all this now makes a perfect set up for us NZers.

Yes it is and all kudos to the people who produce the NZ map, lets help to continue improving this resource.

I've just been on the opensource site and noticed a newer version. Anyone tried it yet?

is the Garmin product free or do i purchase it?

and how does someone combine it with the open source maps? is there a thread that covers this already?

sorry, i'm still REALLY wet behind the ears with regards to anything beyond the standard functions of a 5110 circa-1999 but i'm getting there slowly...

Garmin is not free, but once you have it the NZ maps are free.

Of course Garmin Mobile XT is software, and anything that can be distributed over the internet is available to the unscrupulous whether they want to pay for it or not.

testing123: No Garmin is not free, but the maps, and the software to install them onto the GPS are. There are plenty of tutorials out there to use to get them running, it's not particularly difficult at all.

jstockda: Yeah i've been keeping my maps updated, they're getting better with every release. Some streets in Auckland and Hamilton are now number searchable as far as i'm aware, but not for me down in Christchurch. Give it time though and it will be practically nation wide.
