I've used Palm PDAs for at least a decade, maybe longer, starting with the Palm III (I think). Since then i've had two V's (good model, replaced under warranty eventually), six Tungsten C's (they were all faulty in different ways), three Tungsten E's (two had faulty key out of the box), and now my current 2-3 year old Tungsten E can't accurately tell where i've tapped the screen even a couple hours after calibration. I'm not overly impressed by the Palm hardware, but I love the OS and software. I had an iPaq for a week, the hardware was fantastic, but I hated mobile windows, and sold it at a small loss a week after I bought it.

I need to buy another device, so it's time to decide whether to stick to Palm or go elsewhere. What I really want is a PDA with a keyboard, like the Tungsten C, but they don't make that any more. I don't want a phone/PDA, just a PDA. Does anyone have any suggestions, Palm or otherwise? I can't lose my data, and i'd rather not give up my apps.

The Tugsten Tx is probably the obvious choice, with a faster processor and plenty of memory, and it's $550 from DSE, reduced. $550 isn't too bad a price. I'm just interested in other options, or if anyone knows if anything new's coming out any time soon.

I think you will see from this point on that it's going to be harder to find PDA only - most new devices will comes as PDA Phones or smartphones.

As far as I know only HP make true PDA's nowadays. Just look for a "Windows Mobile Classic" device. The new iPAQ range has two such devices (ie they dont have the phone part integrated). There may be some other OEM's that make them but they are probably not readily available in NZ.

If you dont want something brand new look for a iPAQ 2XXX series (eg hx2490) theses are wonderful devices and I still use mine even though I have a Windows Mobie phone too. You could probably get one off Trademe or hunt around for an online store that still has stock as you could get a bargin.

They have only just been discontinued and if youre keen you can even find some "cooked" ROMS to run Windows Mobile 6/6.1 for this device which has increased the longevity of the device for me.

The devices run WM 5.0 by default.

But the OP doesn't want Windows Mobile - which is a shame because the Palm OS is going to nowhere now. Access has changed the Palm OS to a Linux implementation that never seen the light of the day (or not yet) and Palm is not developing the OS anymore...

Seriously though, I had a Palm device since it was simply "Pilot" (US Robotics days back in 1995), but in 2003 I moved on to Windows Mobile. There are lots of reasons why, but I'd say the Palm OS as it stands now is not much more than the same one from back 2003/2004 - with lots of limitations.

Yeah like I said I had windows mobile, I really, really didn't like it. Palm just works. Sure the OS has limitations, but to keep an address book, notes, calendar, browse the web offline with avantgo or online with wifi you don't need much. Plus I have all the apps I want and need.

I think the Tungsten Tx is what i'll have to get. I just hope I don't get another dud. Happy to hear alternatives still.

Yeah Currently I use a TX as my main pda (yeah I use a Treo 680 as well though) as it simply works for what you need it for. I do admit the current OS is very dated and has several limitations when it comes to things like multitasking and multi connectivity but for a standalone pda these limitations wont show up nearly as much as you aren't having a smartphone.

My 2 main reasons for not giving it up is that the TX has wifi in it with a basic browser that does well for mobile viewing and that is has the larger than normal 320x480 screen which is awesome for watching video clips (look for an app called tcpmp also for winmo too) and also for just normal viewing of the calender and even documents (office files or pdfs).

Styletap is bringing the Palm OS to Windows Mobile and Symbian OS smartphones in the near future, then you'll be spoiled for choice for devices.

I'm learning towards windows mobile now. I've played with a Treo and an Octa and i'm liking windows mobile fine, and the hardware quality seems WAY better than palm.

Interesting - looks like it's already available. http://www.styletap.com/ . Thanks for the tip :)
