Been reading about iphone hardware/software/pricing/plans etc, iphone has a lot of features and looks like a cool toy.
Has iphone bitten into the PPC market? With all it's features how does the latest PPC stand up against the iphone?
I love MAC but hate ipod's and would probably buy a Titan over a iphone because of Windows Moblie.
Anyone got or had a play with a iphone?

I prefer my HTC TYTN II to the Iphone.
A friend has a 1st gen Iphone and I was impressed with it. It has a nice big screen and is pretty clear.
At the time I had not been able to get 3G to work on my phone (import) because the setting on the VF website were wrong.
Now it works and I love it. Have just flashed my ROM to WM6.1 (cooked version) and the new features are great.

Thing I have over the new Iphone.
Front camera - for video calls
Sliding keyboard - builder fingers (though new on screen keyboard layout in new ROM is easier to use).
Can copy and paste between applications.
Has Mobile office - excel, word, powerpoint.
Lots more 3rd part apps available.
Stereo Bluetooth

Probably more that I don't know about.

If you want an ipod, get an Iphone. If you want a business tool - PPC

Symbian smartphones are also more powerful than the iPhone, may be worth a look depending on your needs. Particularly strong in the multi-media front, far more so than PPC.

Just my 2c - but vodafones pricing of the iphone is pretty horriffic.

Cost after 2 years including phone cost

The Iphone is not over priced

The plans they offer are about what you pay for the plans anyway (if you use that much data).

I purchased my phone from expansys for about $1400 NZ and pay about $130 a month anyway.

I think it is just a case that people were expecting to pay $199 or a bit more, and most people are not currently using Data, so they never thought about that cost on their monthly bill.

You can buy the phone outright and pay $979 and put it on any plan you want. You just won't get any subsity on the cost of the phone.

When are you people going to realise that these prices are not "the price of the iPhone"?

Its the cost of service with the iPhone, and includes data and voice airtime.

If you go and get the same usage for a Windows Mobile or Nokia device, you are still going to have a cost in the thousands of dollars over two years.

I am not an iPhone fan boy, I think Vodafone has lost the plot on this, and Mark Rushworth proved that - good move by Telecom losing him and having him pop up at Vodafone....

.... but some of you need to get real and realise the cost of the iPhone is $979, which is actually a very good full retail price for a very cool phone. Its just the plans and restrictions that Vodafone are going to implement that are wayyyy stupid IMO.

$979 compares very well with the retail costs of flagship handsets from Nokia and HTC.

What exactly is "horrific" about it?

If I walked into a VF store today and purchased a N95 on a 24 month contract on the equivilent 24 month 250 contract of 600 anytime minutes, 1GB data and 600 SMS's it would cost me $287.85 per month. I would also receive $400 discount off the $1399 pricepoint of the N95. Entering into the same contract with the iPhone I could pay $199.

ZOMG111 Vodafone are ripping off Symbian users b1gt1me. Lets organise a march down Queen St!

Doesn't compare that well to some Nokia's. The N82 is currently the real flagship Nokia, and can be purchased for as little as $640 (+ $70 for an 8GB card, 16GB cards on the way very very soon).

Thats what i was trying to say, i just worded it badly. What i meant Vodafones offerings for plans with the iPhone are stupid, as you said. I should have added compared to the USA, or compared to canada even, where there are petitions with them complaining, not that it'll do much. But then you have to go into the whole thing about NZ data/phone pricing which has been discussed to death.

At $979 the iphone by itself isnt expensive, its actually a pretty good deal, but on a plan its not (in my opinion), just like many other phones as mentioned. And there is no point in a 3G iPhone when you dont have a 3G data connection, you may as well get a 2G iPhone(in my opinion). Then it all loops back the NZ data/phone pricing again which has as mentioned been discussed to death.

At no point did i suggest anything like that about the iPhone. I don't really care about it that much, thats why i said 'just my 2c' which people dont seem to notice. Its an opinion.
