It's about time Windows Mobile was redesigned to be finger-friendly. Any idea on whether it will be 6.1 app-compatible?

Applications are compatible. The new home screen is not compatible with Today plugins, but you can always revert to using Today screen - if you really want it...

But I think you will like the new home screen.

The menu structure allows you to scroll up and down, and you can move cells up or down. Note that this new home screen is for Windwos Phones running Windows Mobile Professional and Standard only - Windows Mobile Standard is already using its own new home screen.

Note that Windows Phone is the new name for the products. The OS is still Windows Mobile.

It's certainly a good look, and it seems quite well thought out...if phones with 6.5 make it down here I'll definitely consider it once I've erm, put my income on a firmer footing.

It's a shame as they said on Engadget (I think) that the Media Player UI hasn't been upgraded - with that home screen it seems almost a no-brainer to give it a Zunesque makeover. Although perhaps that'll be a future announcement.

I'd quite like to see a full-screen translucent (if it were full-screen it'd have to be) SIP keyboard in order to be truly finger-friendly - I actually thought of trying my hand at something like that but then I thought "Somebody must have a patent on that" (even with the physical slider on the Harrier I came to the conclusion that it was only suitable for use by children or female midgets). Or perhaps it would be more practical for someone to license the "expanding key" style. 'Cos it drives me bonkers.

Lookds promising, although its a well overdue overhaul. Somewhat superfluous in some respects with Touch Flow 3D being available for many handsets now, but should be welcome for the less tech-savvy who will have a better out of the box experience (which WinMo has badly lacked).

I think he meant HTC Touchflo 3D, and I agree with him. I am itching to ditch my WinMo 6.1 phone. The new HTC Magic Android phone which has been announced as an exclusive to Voda looks nice, but that's a whole other thread.
