Hi,

Just wondering, I have seen some other posts saying that nokia maps is free, you just need to pay for voice guidence, but for me on my n95, when I try do navigation, it just says " connect to the internet to check for free availability or purchase options" and then just gives me options for 1 year licence and things like that. I know I can use vodafone compass, but thats no good for roaming.

Use google maps 3 with latitude thats free

Nokia Maps the program and the maps themselves are free. The only thing that costs is voice guided navigation.

You can get your location, and the nearest points of interest etc, for no cost. Maps will list those points of interest from closest to furtherest, built as soon as you want Nokia Maps to tell you how to get there you will need to pay.

NVM, i miss read your post. All I want is gps software that I can download the maps in advance, rather then downloading them on the go, for data charges overseas. While in nz, vodafaone compass does the job.

Vodafone Compass is handy flat rate while in NZ $2.50 per week for all data

Yeah, but thats no good while roaming. Only in nz.

Both Compass and GoogleMaps require you to be downloading the maps as you drive. Nokia Maps are hard loaded to the handset.

You can but 30 day or 90 day licenses for Nokia Maps if the 1 year option is too dear

Shame you can't download maps in advance with any gps software, fear enough I guess.. No GPS while roaming then =[

You can with Nokia Maps.. You you the Nokia Map Loader on your computer, sync the maps you want over to your handset and away you go.... No cost.....

But there is a cost, I have downloaded the maps, but as soon as I start navigating i get "please choose a purchase option"

Nokia Maps are definitely free. I've been using it on my N95 since I got it last year. The Nokia Map loader lets you download the maps for whole countries at a time so you just download the NZ map and if you plan to travel, download the maps for where you plan to go.

GPS is free so there is no charge there either. When it asks to go online just tell it no! The maps will still work without an online connection.

I don't recall Nokia apps asking me for a chargeable option. Perhaps it did right at the start, if it did I would likely have simply declined the paid options and proceeded into Nokia Maps itself. The paid options relate to things like car and walking navigation, city guides etc - they are just add-ons.

I've used Google Maps too - it was wicked but the maps aren't cached and so you need to fire up a data connection which can get expensive fast if you are moving around and the device is loading new maps all the time.
