Hi guys, I've been searching forums about getting push email on the nokia E71 and am now using the nokia messenger? program.

now I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to this push email thing and don't fully understand it.

I'm using a Nokia E71 on NZ vodafone and emailing through a yahoo account, I've got it all working well and my emails are being pushed through fine.

My main question is: in order to use push email does your phone constantly stay "online" to recieve emails and if yes, is it constantly using data or just when it is receiving emails?

Using true push email it does yes, I suspect your setup behaves like push email does but isn't quite.

That aside, yes it will probably be online all the time and it won't use much data when not actually receiving but there will be some being consumed.

Push Email is a fairly generic term - typically describing using Microsoft Exchange with your device do you get emails on your phone instantly when they arrive in your inbox.

Using my ymail account through nokia messenger my messages arrive on my phone straight away without having to check manually or without my phone fetching them at specified times.

Hope that makes sense

You have to pay the GPRS/3G data charges involved in checking to see if there is new mail (called a heartbeat) then each email that is delivered. It's very difficult to put a price on the email usage, as it'll depend on how much you get and how often. A reasonable guide is that your average email without attachments is about 10-20KB so you'd be looking at 50-100 email per MB. I believe the Heartbeat is in the region of about 4MB a month if memory serves me correctly, so for say 1000 emails a month push would use about 15MB of data. Hope this helps.

Oh forgot

Remember you can set your mail proggy to only download the header or first 5kb, and thus saves on data charges for non important emails - if the email is important, you can then click on it to download the rest of the body

Excellent thanks guys, that was just the info I was after.

I have a 100 mb data plan with vodafone and only get up to five emails a day so my data plan should be ample.

the 100MB plan is fantastic. with Push enabled on my E71 (even when I had push on my iPhone),

I still had around 20mb of data left at the end of the month, even though i recieved around 5-15 emails a day and surfed a couple of websites (Geekzone for example) every now and then.

Yeah doesn't really matter now, I've converted to blackberry and haven't looked back since :o)

Although, I think if im being realistic, and i want nice looking HTML formatted emails. I will have to either move back to the iPhone, or a Windows Mobile device.

I have enjoyed using windows mobile devices before but thought I'd try RIM for a change and have been pleasantly surprised. Don't get me wrong though, nokia are great phones but I just find them a little too basic and compared to other smart devices they seem to lack something

Yeah, thats my thoughts.

Although, a family member had a blackberry, wasnt too keen on it to be completely honest with you.

I think if I go for another phone, its going to be a Windows Mobile device.. Especially considering I use exchange 2007.
