Greetings,

I'm currently trying to configure a friend's iPAQ 4355 to connect to the internet via Bluetooth on his Sony Ericsson T637 using Rogers GPRS. (Here in Toronto.) I checked his Rogers Wireless bill, his charges included 'Network Access Plan' and 'Data Access Plan', which I was told are necessary to access GPRS.

At this point, the 4355 and T637 are paired, with the following settings on the 4355:

Phone number: *99***#2 (The CID# corresponds with 'Rogers Internet' Under Data Comm. on the T637)
Username: wapuser1
Password: wap

With these settings the 4355 establishes a connection through the T637. But when I enter a URL in Internet Explorer it returns a 'page cannot be found' message.

Upon further inquiry I discovered an APN needed to be defined. Thus far, these are the strings I've tried under the 'Advanced' tab:

+CGDCONT=2,ip,"INTERNET.COM"
Z;+CGDCONT=2,ip,"INTERNET.COM"
Z;+CGDCONT=2,,"INTERNET.COM"
+CGDCONT=2,,"INTERNET.COM"

I've also tried all possible combinations using 'AT' at the beginning of each command.

Even with any of the extra dialing strings entered however, the iPAQ 4355 won't connect to the T637. When the connection fails the iPAQ gives a 'Device not found' message.

I have also tried checking and unchecking several settings under the 'Advanced' tab, including 'Use terminal', 'Wait for dial tone', etc., using several combinations with no luck.

I have tried the Geekzone bluetooth guides, and have also looked at several pages:

http://www.woggledog.com/index.asp?subject=GPRS
http://docs.kde.org/en/3.1/kdenetwork/kppp/appendix-hayes-commands.html

At this point nothing I've tried seems to work.

Can anyone please offer suggestions or help?

Eazyduzit:

Username: wapuser1
Password: wap

+CGDCONT=2,ip,"INTERNET.COM"
Z;+CGDCONT=2,ip,"INTERNET.COM"
Z;+CGDCONT=2,,"INTERNET.COM"
+CGDCONT=2,,"INTERNET.COM"

When the connection fails the iPAQ gives a 'Device not found' message.

You say "Device not found". Are you using the Connection called Bluetooth Settings, which is automatically created by the Bluetooth Manager when you configure the Bluetooth connection? This connection should have the modem selected as Bluetooth Dialup Modem.

Back to the other parameters. Strange combination of username and password. Are you sure this is not the WAP access one only? I know some operators have different usernames for WAP and Internet gateways.

About the init string, try using 1 instead, and I recommend these two:

Z;+CGDCONT=1,,"INTERNET.COM"
+CGDCONT=1,,"INTERNET.COM"

Don't use AT here because the Pocket PC will add it when needed. And make sure internet.com is the correct APN name.

Thanks for the tips Freitasm, it's finally working!

I had initially adjusted too many settings, and was lost in confusion because of all the strings, check marks, etc.

I started over by pairing the devices again and ensured that 'Bluetooth Settings' was selected under 'Network Management'. I then created a new connection with the following information:

Number: *99***2#
Username: wapuser1
Password: wap

I left the dial string blank to see what would happen.

After finally connecting, I used IE to look at several pages; the only one that made IE close unexpectedly was www.cnet.com. Other than that I'm glad to see it's working. Now to set up Outllook...

Once again thanks for the help Freitasm, I appreciate it! :)

Very nice... About the Pocket IE closing, I've seen this before, and querying with Microsoft resulted that this is a known issue with some pages that use a special format (or something like). It doesn't happen very much.

All the best.
