I am probably getting confused with some other thing, but are Microsoft going to be releasing a new version of Pocket PC OS anytime soon??

Seeing as I'm up for a new one I'd rather get new OS if it's close

There seems to be signs that may be a new OS announcement, but it usually takes sometime for mobile devices manufacturers to come with new models using a new version.

Sorry if I can't be more specific, but I'm bound by a NDA.

Ok so if they release an OS tomorrow (hypothetical obviously)
roughly how long will it take to see devices do you think??

I'm prepared to wait a couple of months

One more question, is the software upgradeable. I have seen some topics about upgrading from 2002 when the 2003 edition came out, will this be the case again??

I'm guessing not, but we can only hope..... excuse my ignorance but what you mean by
"Bound by a NDA"
I presume this means you work for MS in some fashion and can't leak info

It may be that some manufacturer is working on this already - but really who knows? It could have a device announcement soon after the OS release, or a couple of months later. At this stage it's unknown.

As for udpates, it really depends on each manufacturer. Most will probably tell users to simply buy another device. It's not great, but it happened before. I wouldn't count on any update until there's an announcement from a manufacturer.

NDA means a Non Disclosure Agreement. No, I'm not a MS employee. Being a Microsoft MVP means that I have signed an agreement with Microsoft that gives me sometimes the privilege of receiving some information, but I'm bound by this agreement to not disclose anything until Microsoft do so or authorise me. Pretty standard practice with other companies too.

Typically, it takes 4-6 weeks for a new MS mobile OS to appear on standalone PDA's (like IPAQ's), as they are pretty straightforward. Almost always Nth America first.

For mobile devices like Xda.... well, all those radios add lots of complexity!
