I copied an exe game file to my imate PPC phone edition, however, it did not run. How come

u'll need to post a bit more info than that.
What exe? did you attempt to run it? or were you expecting it to autorun.

Not all .exe files are for Windows Mobile. To install a program on your Pocket PC you have to run the .exe on your computer while the Pocket PC is in its cradle and connected to ActiveSync.

Only a few programs are distributed in a .exe format for Pocket PC. Some come in .cab format. In this case simply copy the file to your Pocket PC and using File Explorer find it to execute and install.

i understood that pocketPC apps were distributed as CABs, not exe anymore
(someone is trying to convince me i don't need windows desktop to use a windows mobile pda)

You can find the odd applications as CAB, but most of them (if not 100% of commercial ones) will be in EXE format.

You can obvsiouly in some cases open the EXE (if it is one of those self extract install files visible through WinZIP) and extract the CAB. Then use a program like CabInstall (free, runs on your Pocket PC) use it to determine in which folder you want installed.

I have successfully ripped some .CABS out of EXE files which are just install programs using WinRar.

it's usually the largest file in the EXE and usually ends like "appli000.001" just rename it to software.CAB and follows FreitasM's post with "Cabinstall"
