Hi all
I just got a new PDA/Phone.
The O2 Exec version of the HTC Universal..its great But...
..WM5 has lost the single most important function to me..Pocket Access.
I regularly sync'd my clinical procedure database, its a record of medical procedures I have performed at work, between Sprint Pro DB(PDA) and Access Pro 2003(PC).
Now I cant.
Perhaps Bill Gates has something up his sleeve for later but..
..I would be most grateful if someone who ny knowledge or experience in this area could help me.
Is there any sort of work round..suggestions please?

Welcome to Geekzone... Yes, Windows Mobile 5 dropped support for ADOCE, and consequently there's no Access conversion (MDB - CDB) anymore.

Perhaps the Sprint DB developers are planning something for conversion or native support of these files, like a desktop companion? IIRC, there's a database for Pocket PC with a desktop companion already, other than using Microsoft Access.

Thank you.
I have just had a reply from Kaoinesoft who develop SprintPro and they are currently testing their new version on WM 5. So I just have to be patient.
They do have an existing Desktop Companion but it relies on Pocket Access conversion.

Good to know... The support for ADOCE was actually "deprecated" some time ago, and it was previously announced as being removed completely from Windows Mobile 5. Developers were a little bit slow though to work something out.

I hope SprintDB comes with a new version soon that you can use.

Bad news!
Sprint Pro are now telling me they are waiting for ADOCE dll's to add to WM5 and a "Pocket Access" sync provider for ActiveSync 4.
They say that Microsoft tell them that this will be made available.

Now my observation is that AS4 has Pocket Access sync provider as my Poclet PC 2003 device is still able to sync Access databases through AS4 and Pocket Access appears in AS4 settings when old device connected but not when WM5 connected.

This seems a retrograde step to me.
It also seems inconsistant or inaccurate.
What do you think?

The ADOCE was deprecated and notice was posted for developers to see about this some time ago.

There's a Platform Migration FAQ and one of the questions (posted May 2005) is

"Why do applications that use ADOCE fail on Windows Mobile 5.0?
ADOCE was deprecated in the Pocket PC 2003 SDK and is no longer supported or included in the ROM of Pocket PC devices. For backwards compatibility, the ADOCE runtime and ActiveSync service provider will be made available as a download. However, this runtime is not expected to be compatible with future versions of Windows Mobile, so developers are advised to target EDB or SQL Mobile 3.0 for applications that run on Windows Mobile 2003 or later."

It means that since before Windows Mobile 2003 developers knew of these changes, but they are still working on their updates - or not, according to your report.

Microsoft seems to be aware of this situation, but it seems this was planned and informed in advance. We need more users making pressure on developers to actually update their software and keep pace with the technology.

I know this won't solve your immediate problem, but is at least the explanation for all this trouble.

Good to know real knowledge.
I get the impression that a lot of developers try and wrestle against Microsoft but that that only passes on the angst to the user.
