Hi All

Just bought an HP Photosmart Mobile camera today and there appear to be a couple of problems:

1) Though this was supposed to be new, the camera came without the software and driver CD. I've managed to find a download on the net though, so it may be all good.

2) This however raises the question of whether it actually IS new. The contacts on the SD card have a few black marks on them, as though they have been used (maybe even damaged?) . My experience of this type of thing is zilch - so is this something to be worried about? Also, should I try and clean or remove the marks?

Did you buy it on a store? If yes, return it and ask for a new one. If you bought it through Trade Me, then chances are it's not new.

I bought it on Trademe but the seller is actually a shop (Campusit in Symonds St, Auckland). They sell digital equipment etc to students at "lower" prices. I was assured that there was no CD with the camera (I actually went to the store to pay and pick it up).

It had a price of $150 on it but I know from my research they'd been trying to sell it for some time and I actually got it for a "Fixed Offer" price of $70. I'm pretty happy with this so long as it works. I can negotiate with them, as they've obviously broken consumer law in more ways than one, but I'm hoping to keep it, rather than return it (at that bargain price!)

Should I be concerned about the marks on the SD contacts is actually my main concern right now.

are the marks just thin black 'wear' marks?

I have an SD card here been used about ten times, no marks.
Another one been used lots, with marks.

If they are a business, and sold it all as new, then it must be new, not ex-demo used stock, or a refurbished unit.

They can repair, refund, or replace. Note that with a bargain unit, they might be unable to repair or replace, and instead opt to refund you if you push the issue - which you clearly dont want to happen.

Does everything look at least "pristine" , rather than "perfect" ?

Sounds like you got a bargain, with a minor tradeoff.....

Well it certainly looks OK (apart from the black marks), but with something this tiny, who knows how much use (or abuse) it's had. Maybe they can supply me with an SD cleaning kit or something. I presume you'd need to get a specialised kit, or could you maybe try an eraser? Any thoughts?

I'm going to phone them in the morning and try and get some answers as to its history - it's obviously not new and selling something as new when it's not is a pretty serious offence.

Well, I found out that they had used the camera for demo purposes, but as they'd bought the business only last year, they said the camera just came with the rest of the stock, with no packaging or CD, so not really their fault.

They were very helpful though and offered me a $20 discount - so I got the camera for $50 rather than the RRP of approx $220 (NZ dollars). Can't be bad eh?
