Spent some days now ... don't like touchscreen phones. Many of the Nokias have gone at least hybrid apart from maybe the E72, C3 or E5 ...

So .. if I get a BB, I can disable data so I can use the phone. I don't use the net anyway on the phone.

However is it possible to use email if I wanted to by instaling other software on it ... or is that not possible?

And if I don't disable data, my prepay balance will slowly go away, so does that mean the BB device will try to access online services but it can't and just soak up data?

I pretty much only call, text and use the calendar features, typing notes on the phone etc ... and the odd Tetris.

You're best off looking on the Vodafone New Zealand forums.

The general answer is no, you can't do any data without a Blackberry plan.

This is purely my personal opinion, but I would really think about having your head examined before buying a Blackberry. At least go and "use" one before you buy one. The _only_ thing they do well is Email, and to do it well as they do, you need a Blackberry Data plan.

Apart from that, it's like owning a slightly useless brick that takes 10minutes to reboot.

I have one (provided by my employer) and I suffer it because it's free. However there's not really a day that goes by that I don't wish I could run it over 2000 times with a Mac Truck.

Audiophiles are such twits! They buy such pointless stuff: Gold plated cables, $2000 power cords. Idiots.

If you are not connected with a BlackBerry plan, then don't get a BlackBerry.

As simple as that.

But the thing is what phones are out there apart from those 3x Nokia phones. I cannot get my head around the touchscreen phones or the hybrids. Well I could get a used Nokia E75 that I lost.

I hardly email on the phone anyway. That was a nice to have.
It's pretty much just calls, text and calendar and taking typed notes. International clocks and alarm clock.

Why does everyone say no you can't use a BB without a BB plan?

The more informative and truthful answer is yes you can use it without a BB plan and still have MOST of the same functionality.

It's true that MMS doesn't work, as well as the proprietary app's on RIM's site like Google Talk, Facebook (Only on WIFI), etc... but you can still receive push email.

You just need to install the ShangMail app and it's associated service books.

If you want the BB Browser and OTA downloads, etc, just follow Anworms advice (Google it)
