Hello folks

It has become kind of traditional to have an "owner's thread" for some high end smartphones around here, so this will be the official thread to discuss all technical things related to the Nokia Lumia range in New Zealand.

Please use this thread for tips and tricks for both Lumia 800 and Lumia 710. The Nokia Lumia 800 is available from Telecom ( black and blue) and Vodafone (black), the Lumia 710 is exclusive to Telecom (black). When posting remember to specify which operator you are using.

Also, as we've done with Telecom before (for the HTC Sensation launch) we have selected a few Geekzoners to get a hands on experience with these new handsets on Telecom XT. Their blog posts will be available on our Telecom-sponsored blog Telecom Tech. The six Geekzoners are:  BenbillgatesDreamygundarNeetsQuinny.

They will each receive a Nokia Lumia 800 or Lumia 710, plus some Telecom credit to use the handsets. These will probably be distributed in a couple of weeks time, around the 20th February. These Geekzoners  come from different backgrounds (some from iPhone, some from Android) and operators. I hope to see them participating here in the discussion as well (and who knows who could be selected for the next round?)

Ah! Now I understand the intent behind that recent PM. Curses for attempting to downplay my keenness so I didn't come across too poorly. :-D

I was impatient and imported a black Lumina 800 just before christmas last year. My wife has a imported samsung focus and she was getting annoyed at me grabbing it all the time and playing on it so i had to get my own

currently running on vodafone.

i am loving it so far, still at the stage where i will unlock it and swipe up and down just because. definitely scrolls smoother than the focus with the slightly faster processor.

made two friends jealous so they are looking to buy this phone on telecom and vodafone when available

the battery life has definitely improved with the latest patch in Jan when solved firmware issues the battery. i'd assume the new phones would come with that installed

Great to hear the initiative continues to roll :)

Feel free to ask any questions you may have as you delve into the handsets :)

Got mine for about a week now, My thoughts so far:

Pro:
build quality

slim and light

Mango is fast and highly usable

Apps on the windows phone market are increasing at a fast pace

Cons:
non-replaceable battery, and it could be higher capacity but thats ok

Camera - 8mp.... though the picture taken looks pretty shxty.... can it be fixed by firmware update?

I had very very high expectiions with the soft keypad accuracy, but I found its on par or worse than my Symbian 5800...., may need more time to get used to it???

Voice recognition - long hold the windows button to use it, but recognition is really poor, not like I am using it a lot but comparing to Siri........

Overall awesome phone, has all the functions I need, very happy with it!

BTW:
my phone's battery is fine from startup, checked diagnosis ##634#, it showed as 1512 mAh, maybe my phone is a 2nd batch one? not sure.

One tip:
Long hold the

It will not be available on 2Degress but the vodafone version will work fine on their network.

I'm more interested in the Lumia 900. I'll be interested to see see what it will cost to import. My scheme is to get a Lumia 800 on 24 month contract here (with the $100 rebate), sell it and replace it with a 900. Shame Telecom are not initially also offering the magenta or white versions - my wife is not overly impressed with black or blue .

About to order a Lumia 800. I just had one question, is there a way to move over all my data from my Omnia 7 to the Lumia?? Stuff like text messages and what not.

You can use the Zune client on the PC to sync all your movies, music and photos from the Omnia and then sync the Lumia 800 with the same PC to copy back all that content to the new device. As of now there is no way to back up your SMS in Windows Phone.

Looks like Vodafone and it's partners will sell the Nokia Lumia 800 for $499 on a 24 month $85 plan.
