I've yet to come across one unit in New Zealand with the reported power issue.

If you do come across one they are covered under Nokia NZ's warranty terms.

Thanks for your reply. I guess Nokia would know from the serial numbers of the units issued to New Zealand whether they are from batches that have the power issue corrected?

Would Nokia's NZ warranty give an immediate new replacement if a unit with a power issue was sold in New Zealand? It would be annoying to buy A N8 with a power issue and then have to wait for ages while it was repaired!
My inclination is to wait a few months, but I was planning on buying one now!!

Fred

I've also never come across the issue (I cover the other half of the country than Brent).

I can't speak for the warranty terms in this case, the most definite answer would be from popping in to visit a Care Centre and ask the question if you're based in Auckland or Christchurch, otherwise try the Careline on 0800 NOKIA1.

A friend told me one of her friends got a bad N8. Not sure how it was resolved, but will find out. It's definitely not widespread, and is fully covered under the consumer guarantees act.

I trust Nokia enough to get the problem sorted fast enough if it ever did arise anyway... Not that I would expect it to.

YAY!!! - I get my N8 at the end of next week.... Im really excited!

Oh.. I forgot to ask

Does anyone know about the compatability of Symbian^4 with the N8... Will the N8 be upgradable to Symbian^4 when it releases?

Hi Starplay,

There will no longer be a major break or release for Symbian^4 as has been for Symbian in the past. The Symbian running on the N8 is no longer 'Symbian^3', but 'new Symbian', which will now be a constantly evolving platform.

http://conversations.nokia.com/2010/10/21/nokia-focuses-on-qt-to-extend-reach-for-developers-make-mobile-experience-richer-for-users/

What does all of this mean? Development for all the features and new user interface and everything else planned for Symbian^4 is still on the way. The difference is that each new feature, improvement, or UI will be released as an update to all new Symbian users once it is finished. This means no waiting for a major Symbian^4 update -- you'll get incremental updates and features as they're done, hence the 'evolving platform' analogy.

So to summarise: Yes, the N8 (and its sister devices) will get Symbian^4. And Symbian^5. And on and on, as long as the hardware can still support it. But it will be evolving rather than major updates. This is something that is unique in the smartphone world.

NB: On this subject I know only as much as can be sourced from Nokia's official statements and interviews, so any slight mis-interpretation is mine. I think it all is pretty obvious, however.

does N8 force the updates like the evil empire or does it allow the user to choose?

BrentR: Hi Starplay,

As per my DM.

Nokia NZ only sell via their retail partners, we do not have the ability to sell to end users.

As other have mentioned you are quite able to remove the likes of the wallpapers, startup screens, links if you like, or move them to a folder of your choosing.

Having a version brought in from another country has you running the risk of not being covered under a Nokia New Zealand warranty (it will need to be sent back to the country of purchase), inability to update firmware to locally approved versions, language packs you may not want (arabic, chinese etc)

As Nik has also mentioned, most if not all First Mobile and Digital Mobile stores have live devices in store that you can have a look at and make a decision on whether or not local customisation that is there is too much for you.

Hope this helps clear up your questions, but feel free to ask away if you have more.

Just as a matter of interest .  How come the N8 is sold unlocked in the US for $NZ731 at Amazon but sells here for $999??  I thought with out super high NZ$$ that the exporters keep bleating on about the N8 should be way cheaper here..

Updates are optional. However newer updates and applications may be dependent on other updates, therefore you may be required to download some older ones if you want newer applications.

Also bear in mind that the new evolving system is yet to take place, so I don't know exactly how it's going to play out going forward.

The power problem certainly is real, even though only a limited number of N8s may have been affected. The problems are discussed in the link below by Niklas Savander, Nokia's executive vice president:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z2f4MnLKiT4

His approach and attitude are excellent and as you say, I'm sure that Nokia will "get the problem sorted fast", but nevertheless, some users have been inconvenienced by N8s that have these power problems. Anyway, let's know how you get on with your new unit!

Fred

is Nokia responsible for the O/S(Symbian)? i.e. is it unlike WM and Android where have a separate hardware and O/S vendors?

As of a few weeks ago, yes Nokia are the hardware and OS vendor.

Someone told me that the battery is not user replaceable... Seems a bit odd as all previous Nokia's had replaceable batteries... Just wondering if someone could clear that up?
