Litespeed: Ok, after a week with the Lumia 800, I've found a few issues which have me wondering if I should return it.

1. Photos all have a blue/green tinge to them. I gather the camera used to be great in earlier firmwares, but they have since mucked it up.

2. The AMOLED screen itself might have nice contrast and deep blacks, but turn it anything off dead centre and it turns green.

3. The compass doesn't work in the southern hemisphere which is an issue because I like to use it for bike rides and geocaching.

Check the images on your computer first. Your second point makes it sounds like your screen causes this. The image preview always go green just before it saves, but that doesn't mean they always turn out like that. The camera also has that pink blotch in the middle during preview and it compensates somewhat for that as well when it saves. The camera is not the best around, but I've had a year's worth of good snaps off it.

Looking at my screen, I see the whites go very slightly green when viewed off centre. However I've never seen a screen that didn't change tint, or contrast, or colour off-centre so it seems pretty normal. It definitely has much more contrast, brighter colours and wider viewing angles than the 920, which looks washed out in comparison... yet the reviewers all complain about the 800 and love the 920.. go figure. They both look good on their own in any case.

The compass doesn't work and I'm the guy who has had the video on YouTube, plus tickets in with Nokia about it for the past year. Of course, the very same day I get a Lumia 920, I find an app in the app store that fixes the issue on the 800. It's called compass fixer I think.

I must admit that I haven't spent time looking at the photos on my PC (I just kind of fire and forget). I will have a closer look tonight. If the green tinge is not in the actual output, then I can live with that.

I'm mostly annoyed about the whole compass issue. I've raised it with a few online places and while others report the same problem (and northern hemisphere people don't believe it), there's been absolutely no acknowledgement of it.

I've just tried it out on my 800 and it's not quite as handy as hoped.... it just gives you a working compass with a map. It doesn't fix the problem for all apps. That doesn't really surprise me.

I'd say take it back and go for a later phone if you need the compass. I understand the 820 models are coming along sometime soon. The 920 is of course very nice and the compass works, but it's not nearly as sleek and pocketable as the little 800.

I checked the photos I took on the weekend on my PC and to my surprise, they do in fact look pretty good. So for now, I'll take that off the list of gripes :-)

I'm wishfully hoping that the compass bug is fixed in 7.8, but if it's not then I'll re-evaluate my options. I must say, I've found the GPS in the Lumia 800 to be very accurate - so they certainly got that right.

Telecom NZ confirmed today they're bringing in Red Lumia 920s to go with already available Black and available after Xmas, Yellow

I have had my Lumina 800 for about six months, give or take. Unfortunately it seems to have developed a problem with the USB port - the Phone won't charge when I plug in the cable, unless I put a tiny bit of pressure on the plug (contacts not connecting properly it seems, tried a couple of new usb cables with same result). Looking around the web it seems to be reasonably common - e.g. http://discussions.nokia.com/t5/Nokia-Lumia/Nokia-lumia-800-micro-usb-damage/td-p/1487980

i'm going to send it in to nokia care, but it sounds like they'll just send it back

anyone else had this issue? a usb socket should be a bit more robust than this... six months of connecting usb cables shouldn't be enough to 'damage' it... htc trophy is still going strong a couple of years on and my ipods, iphones and palm treos never had problems.

wireless charging sounds like a good option in the 920 if their usb ports are still problematic... would like to see the magnetic connector from the surface on a few more gadgets though - that looks like a good option rather than plug/socket arrangement.

I had the same problem with a nokia. Turned out some pocket lint had been pushed into the socket preventing the plug from contacting properly.
Might be worth checking.
