yes it probably will come out wider than just VZW

this is actually a world mode phone with both CDMA & GSM chips
the 928 supported WCDMA/HSPA/UMTS bands are 850/900/1900/2100MHz (from the user manual). This phone will work just about anywhere at 3G speeds except areas and providers that use 1700MHz (USA [T-Mobile], Canada, Chile).
This is a 1 x RTT Ev-Do RevA device.

Outside of USA and Canada, the transmitter of the device is capable of operating also in GSM/GPRS/EGPRS900, GSM/GPRS/EGPRS1800, WCDMA900 (Band 8) and WCDMA2100 (Band 1) bands which are not part of this filing.

yes the "open market" phones tend to get updates slightly faster than the carrier specific ones running the mobile operator builds
