Is there any way of buying these direct from Nokia like iPhones from Apple, that way I could cut out the retail silliness and get my servicing directly done via Nokia?

billgates: Any Lumia 1020 will work on all of the 3G mobile networks in NZ regardless of the retailer you purchase it from in the country.

I'm assuming 4G however would be limited to Telecom? I experimented with a parallel Samsung S4 mini and it didn't work on Telecom, so I guess they have locked their 4G to their handsets, and VF vice versa?

If the 4G bands are there for Telecom and Vodafone then it should work. More than likely the S4 mini did not support the right 4G bands required for it work on Telecom.

I am not sure actually which 4G bands are both Telecom and Vodafone are using? Would be good to know if someone else can tell the 4G bands needed for a handset to work in NZ for which carrier.

Do whatever you want to do man.

Nokia only sell via network providers with repairs done locally via Nokia authorised repair agents (Telegistics for TNZ, Fonebiz for Vodafone and 2 Degrees)
4G works on both Telecom and Vodafone in New Zealand on all Nokia 4G devices sold in NZ. Both networks use 1800mhz for 4G currently. All three networks have bought 700mhz rights recently.

I actually find it very interesting if stock levels are getting low enough that they're not easily available.

It must be selling pretty well or did companies just underestimate the demand?

krusta: Gen-i still have the 1020 in range. There was a brief stock out recently, but no issues currently as far as I'm aware.

I suspect they only have them in yellow. I ordered a Black one and there don't seem to be any in NZ (even seems to be a problem in AU too)

I suspect it's the opposite. I've never seen anyone in the street or workplace with one. So as high priced commodity they may have ordered low numbers to test demand, and with relatively low uptake, they have not resupplied. At that price they are head-to-head with iPhone 5 which, unless you really want the camera, is a hard fight for the Nokia to win (add to that WP8 and its a difficult proposition to make at the price, with previous WP7 owners still licking their wounds)

well, I've rolled the dice again with Nokia and bought a 1020 here in Australia from Harvey Norman, I only prey it works back in NZ.

I'm breaking it in now. I've been through WP7, so WP8 is not too painful, although it hasn't started well with not being able to power off while charging (WP7 had the same problem in earlier releases).

the real test will be if I ever see an update after I leave Australia, the regional/network operator model is archaic and will contribute to its demise, but I have accepted the limited life of WP8, and as long as the camera performs as well as the N8, we'll get along fine.
