Success! It wouldnt work with a Telecom SIM, but as soon as I used a friends Vodafone SIM card, it WOULD let me activate, once I entered in the APN details :-)

Great! I had a feeling it would activate with the Voda as mentioned before, purely because 2Degrees was unlikely to be in it's allowed network list. Too new, and perhaps even XT as well.
