freitasm: I'm saying exactly what you are saying, in other words.

Really, same SIM, same location, very different result doesn't seem like a network provider capability statement to me?

Was this HTC Trophy supplied by Vodafone or parallel imported? Are all handsets using the same APN?

Both the Ray and Trophy are Vodafone supplied. Same APN settings as per the supplier. I probably should have excluded the XT reference measure, I think that just confused the issue.

2 inches to the left is *not* the same location, especialy with the vf network (in -my- experience).  perhaps you could perform all of the tests somewhere where you get a solid 5 bars no matter where you place the phone.

lyonrouge: Can you put that same SIM in anther phone (2Degrees packet data performance reports I've heard are quite good, so you maybe enjoying network performance over handset).

i've not got another phone to stick it in, well not one with wifi sharing, so i used my 2d huawei personal wifi device and got pretty similar results:

huawei 2d personal wifi

EDIT: well similar enough for download, for upload the wp7 device gave a much higher result...
