Make sure that the size reported overseas is a non-branded version as yes, each version goes through operator approval and regional customisation. The size may also vary depending on whether the update is done over the air (via the phone) or through Ovi Suite. Ovi Suite updates will reinstall the firmware/application where an OTA update will 'inject' the new code and therefore have a smaller download size.

Both methods have the same result for a minor update. However for a major update (eg PR1.1) you will get more features via Ovi Suite (in the case of PR1.1 this means three games and a QuickOffice update). If you choose an OTA update and therefore don't get all available new features they will still be available via the Ovi Suite.

is there any n8 user from canada here? i've been seeing everywhere that rogers (canadian carrier) hasnt allowed pr 1.1 to their n8s. they have not said anything about it and that could lead to think they are not planning to release ANY of the updates (would not be the first phone they do that with). is there any way of getting the updates in (future) rogers branded phone? i mean, i love the phone but i plan to buy it with high expectations on getting software updates.

I have never heard of a Nokia software update being completely blocked by a network. I know it sometimes happens with other operating systems, however we work closely with the networks to make sure that the software is compatible and that they are happy with it. There should be no reason for Rogers to block the update permanently but sometimes the above mentioned approval process takes longer for some networks than others.

What I miss with the N8 is that unlike my now dead Nokia E52 it does not send navigation voice instructions to bluetooth handsfree/headsets. I understand this is the result of a decision by the firmware team to not incorporate the capability in the phone's firmware rather than an omission from the Ovi Maps 3.06 application itself. Hopefully it will turn up in a firmware release soon or even sooner than soon Smile.

Apart from that pretty happy with the phone and feel I made a good choice (even though I could have got a fruit machine considerably cheaper).

This is in fact a change in Ovi Maps 3.06 rather than the New Symbian firmware. There is currently a feature request on the 3.06 BetaLabs page for a setting that allows you to choose between the two options, so hopefully this will be implemented in future versions.

I got my understanding from a Nokia employee (supposedly from the Maps team) message in the Maps 3.06 Betalabs pages. But whichever it was omitted from, if bluetooth voice navigation to handsfree/headsets is coming that's what matters.

There was some mention here in an earlier post regarding predictive text. I have just given Swype a go and it seems to work very well and I'll stick with it - was much to my surprise having given swipey things up as bad news from tries on PDA's back in the past.

I saw a comment elsewhere than here that gave the impression that the touch screen vibration can be turned off - if so I haven't found how? Not sure if I would want it off but wouldn't mind trying it off if that is possible.

That setting is within each of the profiles, just personalise the one you want to have no screen vibration.

Thanks Brent - I don't know how I missed it as I had looked in the profile settings a number of times.

I have discovered that the real name for the effect is haptic feedback. Must start asking people if they have haptic feedback Smile.

I see that Nokia is adopting Windows Phone as its principal smartphone strategy:

http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2011/feb11/02-11partnership.mspx

Does anyone know when the Windows system will be incorporated in Nokia phones?

If I buy a Nokia N8 now, do you think that Windows 7 will be able to downloaded in place of the Symbian system that is on the Nokia N8 now?

Or, would it pay to defer buying the N8 until Windows 7 is actually installed on all newly-manufactured units?

Incidentally, are N8 units that can now be purchased in New Zealand completely free of the power problems that affected some of those manufactured last year?

Thanks for your help.

I've found my internet access (JoikuSpot and USB Dialup through Vodafone) drops ever half hour or so (laptop states that it's connected, but nothing goes through), I reconnect and it goes for a while. This I had been putting up with, then tried an Android 2.2 (Telecom) and it stayed connected until the battery went flat. My question is, is this a N8 challenge or a Vodafone one?

I have an N8 as modem and use Vodafone, sometimes connected all day with no problems.

First Nokia Win phones release is said in news releases to be later this year but who knows.

Not a chance that Win will be downloadable onto N8 phone.

Waiting or not for Win phones is a personal decision. I didn't think it worth waiting. Besides I am used to the Symbian approach.

Don't know about any power problems - if it was put as being so on the internet forums then it must have been true mustn't it? LaughingLaughing. I have had no problems at all with my N8.

Lotsa phones out there, if the N8 suits then I would go for it. If in doubt look around further.  I could have got an iPhone quite a lot cheaper but went for the N8 so that is how the personal choice bit goes - I suspect the Apple, for example, is a better choice for those new to touch screen with apps, email, eBooks, music, etc but I have been using touch screen PDA's, for example, for many years so long past the "gee wiz, look what my phone does..." bit from seeing those things on hand held devices.
