For those interested. The size of the 920 appears to be close to that of an SII with a cover fitted on it, so not a huge step up.
Although personally I'm for something a little smaller all round.

1) When is it going to be released in New Zealand?
2) Is it going to be on the Telecom XT Network?

I'm going to be waiting for the iPhone 5 announcement in 12 September but it will be pretty depressing if Nokia drags their feet getting the phone to New Zealand.

Yeah exactly this! I was always quite disappointed that the Lumia 900 never officially made it here (unless I missed something). The 920 looks incredible, my partner will be grabbing one of those in a heartbeat - assuming they get released. I know they can be imported but a local release always makes it easier.

Disappointed that Nokia didn't bring out the boxes with Nokia Lumia 820/920 here at TechEd New Zealand after the announcement :(

So the new iPhone wont be evolutionary either?

Nokia has some pretty flash camera technology among other things. I guess Apple will release something that's been in other handsets for a while and try to make it look as if they came up with the idea.

kawaii: Just had a look at the webcast and that is one heck of a sexy phone but questions are:

1) When is it going to be released in New Zealand?
2) Is it going to be on the Telecom XT Network?

I'm going to be waiting for the iPhone 5 announcement in 12 September but it will be pretty depressing if Nokia drags their feet getting the phone to New Zealand.

The bloggers are saying 18 October for Europe, followed by end of October for the US.

Is there a typical delay before they would show up with NZ carriers?

This looks really great, I want to see what Google brings to the game with their next Nexus. I have the Gnex at the moment, I love it but this Nokia may be my next! Love the colours, so much different from the all chrome and glass devices of the past several years.

At the end of the day it will not change anything.

Nokia missed the biggest and perhaps only chance they had to make it a worthy contender to other well established brands. By announcing a smartphone with no price and no release date they just managed to kill themselves as a credible player in this market. And I'm not the only one saying that.

This week Apple announces the iPhone 5 and by the time Nokia Lumia 920 and 820 are available in the market, Apple's position will be already well established.

As per the article, blame Microsoft. But also blame Nokia for not pushing it harder as the flagship Windows Phone OEM.

Samsung, LG and HTC Windows Phone devices are not even close to be in the same area around the same universe as Apple and Nokia could be. And now Nokia decided to leave that position.

Don't get my comments in the wrong way. I still think the Nokia Lumia and Windows Phone OS are a great combination and I think the Nokia Lumia 800 is probably the most beautiful handset around. But their Go To Market strategy is really not going to convince John Doe they are a platform worth exploring.

Agreed - the event should have just been to show off but they should have announced a unsubsidised price and release date then work with retailers to get it out there then negotiate with carriers. Launch internationally and get the hype going with some sort of target because the choice now is between the Samsung Galaxy S3 which is available today or the Nokia 920 which is available - well, I don't know - and that gap of information makes me suspicious it'll be 6 months away and I don't have 6 months to wait for it to arrive in New Zealand.

The alternative would have been to make the announcement in late October. By that time iPhone 5 might have sucked all the oxygen out of the phone buying conversation and nobody would be listening to them. We now know that a buyer looking for genuine innovation would not be interested in 5, but Nokrosoft wouldn't have been able to know that at the time.

The reality is, lots of vendors make tactical premature announcements to try and throw doubt on purchasing decisions and convince potential buyers to hold off. Apple would do it too if they only had 5% market share and were at risk of being ignored by the media.

Launch price indications are 600 & 450 euros for the 920 and 820 respectively. The S3 had a launch price of 599 euros. Based on this I'm expecting carrier pricing here to be around $1k for the 920 and perhaps $750 for the 820. What do you reckon, do my workings add up?

Sure. The problem is that Microsoft is treating mobile ecosystem as it were desktop/laptop and it's not. The company is timing Windows 8 release to consumers in time for OEMs to deliver for the Christmas shopping.

That's fine for desktop/laptops because those guys don't have to deal with mobile operators and their arcane testing procedures, endless bureaucracy before releasing a smartphone into the wild. They can release a new laptop without any worry about others blocking their path to the shelves.

By the time the Windows Phone 8 handset hits the streets, season buying is gone.

Bad timing.

It goes over a bit. For most smartphone manufacturers the customers are the mobile operators, not the consumers.

Apple changed this. They made something so exclusive that operators have to have them in the shelves so they accept anything. It doesn't happen with anyone else.

The next step? Read my blog post about Amazon creating a worldwide MVNO and wait for February 2013.
