I've been told to buy the Nokia Lumia 930 but I've got my heart set on the Nokia Lumia 1520.
Unless someone on this forum can talk me out of it my next phone will be the NL 1520

Hmm.. I saw the GSM Arena review for this phone - was expecting good things but then i saw the battery life isnt quite up to scratch. What is the real life battery for those who are using this phone?

I charge my Lumia 930 every day, just like I have to on my iPhone and Android Nexus 5

What smartphone don't you have to charge each day anyway? Wireless charging makes it so much easier as well!

I got some pretty great battery life results with my review unit, and that was with location et cetera enabled for Cortana. Would expect a full day + a chunk of the next workday with standard use. It barely sips power in standby.

I'd expect it to be on par with other Snapdragon 800 devices, e.g. the Xperia Z1, LG G2, & Note 3, allowing for the differences in display size/type, OS, & battery capacity. It should be most comparable to the Cat4 Galaxy S4 (i9506) with S800, as the 930 has the same display panel as the S4 & similar battery capacity (2420mAh in the 930 vs. 2600mAh in the i9506).

Nathan and Nikt: How do you find the device after a few days use? I read the device can get hot in the bottom corner.

Where did you get your units?

I'm looking at getting this for my wife. 1520 is too big for her. I've got a 1020 and before that a 920.

I didn't have any issues with the device heating up, certainly no more so than other Snapdragon 800 devices like my Note 3. I'd imagine churning through a lot of full-res photos/1080p video/intensive gaming might achieve that, but it wasn't something I noticed during my time with the 930.

Mine was a review unit from work, went back quite some time ago unfortunately. 8.1 is really rather good - I'm back to the trusty 520 to get my Windows Phone fix in the meantime. :)

I think that was the case. Or just bad luck (one off issue). Some of the people reporting it replaced it and was fine. Apparently the CPU is near the bottom-right instead of up at the top. As such, it can get slightly warmer in that corner. The metal also likely acts as a heat sink. But most people say it's fine - no different to other phones.

I'm looking forward to trying it at my local Vodafone store.

It's too bad Vodafone and Telecom don't stock the 1520, though you can easily get it elsewhere. I seriously debated the 1520. Big screen + bigger battery is very appealing but in the end I felt I had to go with the 1020. Such a fantastic camera (I'm a photo nut), fits better in my pocket and the camera grip accessory is really useful (i.e. can attach it to my tripod, extends my battery, etc).

Must be fun trying out all these devices!

Doubt you'll be disappointed with the 20MP shooter on the 930, it's a great compromise between MP and usability - and thanks to the Snapdragon 800 chipset, it's much more practical for snapping shots quickly than the 1020. The Living Images feature is killer, too - if you've not seen it in action, it records a few seconds of footage before a photo is taken, then animates that when viewing photos in the gallery. Works particularly well for group scenes, as you can see people pose before they're frozen for the final shot. Delightful wee thing.

Posted a couple of photos I took with the 930 in my review, the one of the raindrops on the window came out spectacularly as you can see the reflection of the building in each of the drops (Let me know if you'd like to check it out in full size, unfortunately I didn't save the raw images).

The 1520's an interesting beast. From some conversations I've had with folks at work, I understand the market for powerful, larger screened devices translates to sales of the Galaxy Note line and little else, as it's hard to convince most folks that a larger device is worth more. Suspect that'll change soon enough, or I hope so, anyway, being a sucker for phablets. Still thinking of picking one up secondhand to have a play with, although a successor with a stylus + OneNote integration ala Surface would really push me in the Windows Phone direction.

And yep, still thoroughly amused that I've managed to wrangle my love of tinkering with smartphones into (part of, anyway) a career! :)
