A very nice looking and well spec'd phone. Some of the other gear Nokia has announced looks great too. I'm not sure that on its own the N9 will be a market disrupting device though.

I was expecting a pop out qwerty keyboard, mainly as a result of what had been rumoured and the teaser video. I wonder if there is another Meego device in the wings with a pop out keyboard?

This phone is certainly slanted at the social media/music market.

I also see that Nokia has publically stated that they are commited to Symbian which puts to rest the stories that Symbian is dead or dying.

With a phone as sexy as the N9 running Meego you have to ask the question as to what happens next with Meego?

What is exactly the point of having a handset for developers? Sure, developers can test out their apps and what not on it, but why not use a device that is commercially available?

That explains the existance of the phone in the video then. Pity it's not going to be for general availability.

One could argue that Meego isn't one more mobile OS it is the development/intergration of two OS's Maemo and Moblin a collabaration between Nokia and Intel respectively. Meego already existed, prior to Nokia's announcement earlier this year they were going to use to use WP7. Meego is still being used by Intel and some Tablet manufacturers.

Regarding the developers, Meego supports apps developed on the Qt framework, Qt being used by such apps as Google Earth, and Skype. Qt also supports cross platfrom distribution of apps developed with Qt. In some cases a distiller programme may be required for a particular platform but the app only has to be made once.

The N9 has set a standard for the WP7 phones to be launched later this year.

It looks very slick, with some commentators saying that all it needs for some reviewers to give it the highest possible ranking is have the forbidden fruit symbol etched onto the body.

I think the design and hardware is second to none.

The only thing that is a negative to me is the OS. A mobile without a good range of apps is a disadvantage. Android itself is still catching up... I can't imagine companies creating apps to support Meego anytime soon.

I think you will find there is already a good number of apps available for Meego. So far as I know many of the existing Ovi apps will work. Any app developed on the QT framework should work on Meego.

Also Intel and others are making tablets with Meego, there are other devices to develop Meego apps for.

It's interesting reading some of the comments on the internet, some people are questioning Nokia's decision to use WP7 since Meego seems so good already.

There is huge developer support for MeeGo. The Ovi Store gets thousands of apps added per week, a large number of which are now written in Qt. Anything written in Qt can seamlessly be brought to MeeGo, with simply a few clicks in 95% of cases.

As an indie developer myself I can confirm how easy it is to write one application that supports any operating system that Qt provides, at any resolution and orientation your app may come across. Also note that there is a very functional community port of Qt to Android (which creates native apps, not Java apps that run in an inefficient virtual machine; there are already apps in the Android Market written in Qt) and there is evidence of promising work with Qt also running on iOS.

It makes a huge amount of sense for a new developer with any sense to learn Qt as they can code for three major mobile operating systems (including the two biggest world-wide sellers) with a potential two more on the way. Not to mention they can use the same language and most of their original code to make the same app run on PCs (Windows, Linux and Mac are natively supported).
