I was speaking wistfully, it's not something I actually think they should be doing or might be likely to do (although that said, Nokia overseas have been doing some developer outreach - whereas Microsoft in New Zealand are pretty much just going through the motions these days. Very small motions).

paulspain:

I picked up the Lumia 800 overseas to test out and have been quite impressed by the it - Nokia are on to a winner with this design and the Nokia Drive app is the best I've used. It will be interesting to see what sort of market share Windows Phone can gain thanks to the attention Nokia has with the Lumia range.

Re Nokia Drive, this is a very good app, I'm presuming the Windows version is the same as the Symbian Anna one .  There is no need to own a Tom Tom or NavMan.

One thing they did with the Symbian version is disable the bluetooth audio on the turn by turn nav instructions. How does the Windows version handle this?  It would be nice to have the option of turning on the bluetooth audio.

I have to say I tried the Nokia drive on N9... If you ever get a TomTom Live you will see anything else is... bad.

TomTom Live gives you the time of arrival and warns of delays, road closures, road works, accidents, change routes based on this information and gives you accurate, up to the minute information collected from AA.

Seriously, Nokia Drive may be good for a smarphone but it's not comparable to having real time information being taken in consideration when calculating routes.

Nokia Drive already has these features overseas, and they're not far off for NZ.

At which time I will then rethink the status quo ;)

Unlike some people I think we have to evaluate what's available now - for example people who won't buy the iPhone 4S because they are waiting for the iPhone 5 and unicorns...

Very true re waiting for things promised in the future.

Perhaps I should have qualified my statement, how much do you pay for a Tom Tom, how much are the map updates and how much does the live subscription cost?

The Nokia app is free and for a free app it is very very very good.

Sorry for the thread drift.

No thread drift - it's an open one at the moment, anything related to the Nokia Lumia...

I get to (hopefully) play with the Lumia 800 next Thursday with Nokia. I really can't wait to get my hands on one, the cyan looks really awesome!

I think waiting for unicorns is one of the biggest pitfalls for Windows Phone at the moment (and has probably affected sales in the US for people who've been paying attention and waiting for Nokia).

There's always going to be something better later, but sooner or later we'll all be dead.
So let tomorrow's unicorns feed themselves.

On the other hand (and this *WILL* sound as sour grapes), Microsoft last year decided to reduce the Windows Phone MVP program, so a huge number of MVPs (basically anyone not posting in Microsoft's own online forum) were removed from the program... At a time when they needed more people involved in community, they removed them

Disclaimer: I was a Windows Mobile MVP (and then Windows Phone MVP) since 2004 until 2011.

a bit off topic for a nokia thread, but wondering why you should still be an MVP for windows phone... what contributions do you make to the windows phone community that would make you stand out as an MVP?

I considered the effort involved in becoming an MVP for ms crm... and i just dont have the time left in the day to do it.

That's true.
The Lumia 900 has a front-facing camera, but there's no indication that's going to be released in New Zealand.

(I'm lucky in that I never want other people to see me while I'm talking to them. Even when physically present)

I am not saying *I* should be a Windows Phone MVP under changed circumstances. They did however prune the group a lot, including some people who should remain a MVP due to their outreach (including user groups, etc). Many interesting stories but not able to disclose these due to NDA.

Folks... I've created a new "Nokia Lumia Owners' Thread". Also announced the next round of Geekzoners' reviews on TelecomTech (read the owners' thread)
