There are heaps of apps for Windows Phone, OK, maybe not the bank ones, apart from a couple, but for those, you just use the mobile site instead, the same as for news. BBC, NewsHub etc all work fine as mobile sites and you can pin them to the Start screen. Plenty of F1 apps too to use, they may not be official, but they work just as well, or if not better. Here are some examples of F1 apps - http://www.windowscentral.com/top-windows-phone-apps-keeping-track-formula-one-racing

There are many Universal apps being developed, and with what I believe the ability to port iOS apps to WP, that will give a greater selection. How many apps does one need anyway? Oh and I can order pizza from my phone, Domino's has made an app now.  As for controlling a receiver amp, I have something called a remote control which does that, works well surprisingly.

You are right, there are heaps of apps, just not many of the ones that are useful in our daily lives.  And you can be as sarcastic as you want and jump on my examples but they are just that, examples.

Like you I was a staunch defender of Windows Phone having used it since it was first released in NZ, until I reached the point where the lack of apps was just too painful.  I think you'll eventually reach that point as well.

I really hope that Windows Phone 10 eventually takes off, I really do, and I hope that developers start creating useful apps for it.  Maybe then I'll switch back to Windows Phone.  In the meantime I'll use Android.

Not trying to be sarcastic :) Just saying that it works for me. I have been with WP for over a year now, and it does what I want - it texts, makes phone calls, plays games, has Facebook etc.  I'll stick with it and see how it goes.

Not at all, Microsoft has Maps, why do you need more than one app to do maps on your phone?

So your arguments are;

1) There are mobile websites available for missing apps.

2) There are third party apps to fill in some of the gaps where companies don't see the value in supporting Windows on mobile.

3) There will possibly be more windows apps in the future.

To that I would respond:

1) There are native apps for just about everything on Android and iOS.

2) There are official apps for F1, BBC etc which work better than the mobile sites and offer more functionality.

3) The apps for iOS and Android are already here.

And to add to that, Microsoft don't even support their most impressive features in new Zealand. I glad it's working for you, but it's not exactly a compelling case to stay with Windows and certainly not a case to switch from iOS or Android.

I've just finally left the Windows Phone ecosystem and gone to Android.  It's a pity because I liked Windows Phone but the lack of useful apps was just getting beyond a joke.

Now I have apps for my bank, Xero, News etc. etc.  I can control my receiver amp from my phone, I can order a Subway sandwich or a pizza, I can follow the Formula 1 races with the F1 app, and much more.   All the things that a smartphone should be able to do, and that Android and iOS users have always been able to do, but most of which I was never able to on my Windows Phone.

I think MS has been dragging the chain for too long and everyone has given up on Windows Phone.  I agree with Mauricio, Windows Phone is dead.

It's a pity, it could have been so good.

Mate, there are *no* apps for Windows Phone.  I'm really dissapointed Microsoft don't take a stronger hand on this and have their own app development team that specialise in helping major companies to develop apps - basically - write the apps for them and say, here ya go! Banks, airlines - the usual stuff that you'll find already done and advertised by the companies for iOS and Android.

Probably too late now, missed the boat already, again.

Can we stay on topic - I'm subscribed to this thread to hear news about Cortana in NZ and don't want to keep getting emails every time one of you posts another boring comment about the app store!

There has been literally no news about Cortana in NZ in this thread at all.

Well, I 'rebooted' the thread posting on that.  And the MS folk have replied and said 'we don't know anymore'.  Sounds like WP10 is almost here though.

The MS folk have said nothing more that "it's coming" since the thread began, which is both obvious and meaningless.

WP10 may be almost here, but it doesn't bring Cortana with it.

basically that strategy does not work.  Its not just writing an app once, its keeping it up to date, back end service changes, etc etc

I get the feeling that HERE are transitioning to a data licenser rather than an application developer. Microsoft already license HERE data for their Maps application so an official HERE application seems like a waste to me.
