I can't see how the app problems is going away. Not unless they create an android emulator, that will let all android apps work on windows. Infact I can't see why they don't do that, although google won't like that. If you were an app developer, you are always going to write it for the OS that has the most users, as it has a better ROI.

If it were true that one would do it for the OS with the most users the Apple store would be very small

Yes indeed Mike. It's not only about the number of users, but how much money the average user on a given platform has to spend. We all know about the typical affluence of Apple users, but there is some evidence to suggest that a large number of IT Professionals use the WP platform, hence probably have a lot more money to spend than the average Android user.

Rubbish! It's no riskier than doing it on any other portable PC which could be stolen.

The Kiwibank mobile banking website works really well on a small screen. For added security, you can only send money to payees that are already set up.

Kind of limits your options if you insist on being tethered to a LAN cable whenever you're doing online banking.

Haven't you heard of 128-bit encryption as used by all the banks? This works regardless of whether you're using a phone or any other computer. I've yet to see any cases where that encryption has been broken. All NZ banks have been using it for almost 20 years now, so it is well-proven technology.

Yep, I have heard of 128-bit encryption.

I do understand it somewhat. Mathematics is King!

They have written tools into Visual Studio that let you take your Android and IOS code and with minimal changes recompile it into Windows mobile code. Also Dev's don't write for the platform with the most users (Android) primarily. They still write mainly for IOS. Plenty of big apps start as IOS apps then make their way to Android. IOS has affluent users (painting with a wide brush here) and they have a minimum of hardware deviation which means no mucking around with hundreds of different CPU, screen size, GPU, screen pixels combos etc. It is simple and popular. Also they have the most users on a consistent OS base which means less stuffing around targeting different API levels.

Whatever happens, Windows phone is not doomed, it is more relevant than ever before and is a serious part OF MS strategy going forward.

With the Windows 10 strategy of one OS the MSFT ecosystem can have a very good future I look forward to 10 and each device being an extension to each device. If that succeeds them Windows phones succeeds.

I'd be really interested in why people think it's ever going to be a main stream (ie reasonable market share) operating system. What reason for change would an iOS or android user have?

The reasons I mostly see in this thread is that it's part of Microsofts strategy so it must be successsful. Given that I don't know of Microsoft ever having a successful mainstream mobile product why would that change?

scuwp: We have just changed to Nokia/Windows phones at work (from iPhone's & Samsung Galaxy's no less, obviously a money saving venture). Haven't yet found a single person that actually likes them, and all sorts of IT issues linking with our other systems. The result is a mobile workforce that hates and does't use the tools they are given = reduced satisfaction and productivity. Hell you can't even go onto a local retailer and by a case for the damn things!

The platform will never compete in the mobile marketplace with a product like that, they should pull the pin on it now and get it over with...preferably before it's my turn at work to get my iPhone replaced!

Can you describe the integration issues please so we can assist

Under the Windows 10 and beyond strategy Windows phone does not need to become mainstream on its own, as it wont be on its own

I'm hugely into the Google ecosystem, drive, chromecast, chromebook, android.
I have a choice of hardware with my phones... Sony (preferred), LG, Samsung, Huawei, Moto.... geez, the list goes on.
All without major change.

What choices do I have with iOS? hahaha.

Windows Phone? pfft.

End of story.
