I've started adding to the tech fund for when this is released, I think it's awesome. I hope Nokia is just mucking around saying they're not going to be following along with MeeGo cos it's damn good looking. I think the hype/marketing behind it is letting iit down, Nokia needs to polish up just a bit personally. I also saw a price on cnet.com saying for a 16gb model it would cost $660 USD. I hope it isn't too limited in numbers, I'm willing to take a risk on it.

I too hope that this isn't the only Meego phone Nokia release for public use. The N9 looks fantastic and the 3 screen UI with the way it functions is very slick, I was hoping for a pop out QWERTY keyboard as well. They have also released the N950 for developers to use. This in itself suggests to me that it's possible there will be more Meego handsets.

I wonder that Nokia are having a dollar each way so far as their higher end OS is concerned. Right now they seem to have a very competitive OS in Meego and have WP7 coming at the end of the year. WP7 has had good press so far but needs improvement in some areas, (which is coming), and it badly needs greater market penetration which Nokia will give it. I expect the Nokia WP7 phones to be good BUT if for some reason WP7 fails to deliver for Nokia they have an Ace up their sleeve with Meego.

One big advantage I see for Nokia to continue with Meego is they have control over it's development and are not relying on a third party.

Nokia seems to have made an excellent package in the N9 in that the social media functions appear to be very well integrated with only one app required to access the various social media. The dolby stereo is a step up from your normal hand held device and touch to pair NFC function is very very cool. The graphics handling capability seems to be excellent too. This phone will be very appealing to the facebook/foursquare market as well as providing an excellent music and video player. The fact that it runs Meego or any other OS will not matter to many prospective purchasers so long as it works well.

I think it will sell well, perhaps well enough for Nokia to look at more Meego handsets. Everytime I think I have my next phone picked out along comes another one to think about, first the N8 was on the radar, then the E7, now the N9, at the moment the E7 with the Symbian Anna upgrade has the edge with the QWERTY keyboard however I will certainly be having a close look at the N9. Before I've made my choice the WP7 phones may be here and the goal posts move again.

What ever happens, there is going to be a big expectation on what the WP7 phones deliver later this year.

I see the N9 is listed on the Nokia New Zealand site, I guess we can assume it is to be launched here at some point in the not too distant future.

ALTRON: If the N9 can get whatsapp (and maybe even Viber) native app id be very interested.

I had a look on the Ovi store but the N9 isn't listed there yet, however the N9 comes with Skype pre-installed. Also since whatsapp and Viber have Android versions the N9 should be able to run them according to the article mentioned in a previous post.

Note that if you are referring to Alien Dalvik, the application still needs to be repackaged by the developer -- it's not as simple as downloading and running it.

Whatsapp have been very good at supporting Symbian so far, and as intelligent developers are most likely looking at Qt now to cover our whole base of devices. I wouldn't be surprised if a native app for the N9 isn't far off.

Thanks for clarifying. The article I referred to did mention repackaging but other articles have made it sound like no repackaging was required. It gets a bit hard sometimes to get the good oil.

Here's hoping that the N9 isn't a one off and there are more Meego devices to follow from Nokia.

The latest Engadget mobile podcast gave a big thumbs up to the N9.

My only reservation about buying a fone like this is that it may be an orphan with no upgrades or apps.

Sounds like Nokia went down the wrong path by getting into bed with Microsoft so early..

It certainly does beg the question as to why Nokia jumped to WP7 so soon, particularly since Meego looks as good as it does, and is ready for release now, and WP7 won't be on Nokia devices till the end if the year at the earliest. Despite the official line from Nokia you do have to wonder how much Stephen Elop's ties with Microsoft influenced the decision to go with WP7.

I'm not sure what Nokia's strategy is with the release of the N9. Are they intending to run a three platform lineup or was the N9 an experiment? If it was an experiment, with the good reviews it is getting, even from reviewers that have panned Nokia in the past, I wonder that Nokia have created a situation that they may indeed need to keep the Meego OS on the boil.

Meego is about the to be released on several tablets, inluding ASUS and ACER, I think Intel are releasing one of their own as well. Many of the reviews on the pre-release Alpha versions have been positive. With the release of these Tablets there will be a wider app audience which must have flow on benefits for the N9.

nikrolls: There is huge developer support for MeeGo. The Ovi Store gets thousands of apps added per week, a large number of which are now written in Qt. Anything written in Qt can seamlessly be brought to MeeGo, with simply a few clicks in 95% of cases.

As an indie developer myself I can confirm how easy it is to write one application that supports any operating system that Qt provides, at any resolution and orientation your app may come across. Also note that there is a very functional community port of Qt to Android (which creates native apps, not Java apps that run in an inefficient virtual machine; there are already apps in the Android Market written in Qt) and there is evidence of promising work with Qt also running on iOS.

It makes a huge amount of sense for a new developer with any sense to learn Qt as they can code for three major mobile operating systems (including the two biggest world-wide sellers) with a potential two more on the way. Not to mention they can use the same language and most of their original code to make the same app run on PCs (Windows, Linux and Mac are natively supported).

In the case of Qt apps porting to Android are you talking about the Necessitas project?

Regarding the N9, it looks very nice, although there are one or two things that might annoy me. I'm a bit old school, so I prefer a camera shutter button and I like that with the N8, with the right screwdriver I could replace the battery without sending the N8 to a Nokia repair centre. Hopefully I won't have to do that until after the warranty period, but I like the fact that the option is there.

HDMI out, USB onthego and microSD card support would have been nice too, although with the 64GB internal memory option, I'll most likely never need that microSD.

While mobile devices aren't my favourite things for surfing the web, the HTML5 Test score of 283 is very impressive.

In the case of the N950, I'm told these are going to given to developers, so some of those developers will have them in their hands before the N9 is available to end users. From my understanding, if you were thinking of applying for one, you're already too late.

Correct about the developer devices, and you must be an established developer or or have a well developed plan about what you're doing with them.

Yes, the Android port is the Necessitas project and there are already applications on the Android Market using it. It means that it's almost a no-brainer for new developers to pick up Qt because of the platforms they can target without extra work, including MeeGo.

Also note that with all of our devices that have fixed batteries we have extended the warranty period of the battery to match that of the device itself.
